i think quill always equals threaded. (edit: maybe not - can anyone clear that up for me?) and maybe the nitto technomic? i don't know if you can get it in 90 deg. but i know it's wicked long.

I thought so too, I can't find it in a 90 or even an 80. I'll settle on the 71 if I must.

A quill to threadless adapter is often the most economical/easy to find solution for unpopular quill angles.

There's a reasonably common old sakae 1" quill stem that comes in 90 degrees, but as far as new stuff of acceptable quality I don't know of any.

I have a Cinelli that's either a 130 or 140mm (I'd have to measure), but 73 ? degrees, missing the cone/wedge and bolt, and for 26.4 bars. The 26.4 leaves you with your choice of old Cinelli bars, but if interested PM me.

Guys the op is talking about 90 degrees off the headtube angle.

kathrot: Yes, quill=threaded headset. Non threaded headsets require the extenal clamping stems+starfangled nuts+little caps to keep the headset together and tight. On threaded headsets the threaded part where the headset is tightened is right on the top of the steerer tube, so you couldn't clamp on a stem externally if you wanted to---there's no room. Hence the need for a quill. Sorry if this is confusing, i suck at explaining things today for some reason.

You can get kits to fit clamping stems on top of threaded headsets but it's a bit kludgey. Basically it's a quill with a tube poking out vertically that you clamp on to.

salsa sells a 90* in 90, 100, 110, and 120mm lengths... they may have done longer in the past

Im assuming you actually want a 73 degree stem as that would make the top of the stem virtually parallel to the ground. Get a nitto technomic?

Are you looking for a long-quilled stem or a quilled stem that is long? ie, do you need vertical extension or horizontal extension?

If you're looking for vertical extension, go for a Nitto Technomic or try to find an older SR/Sakae in ye olde parts bin at your LBS. I don't think either come in a 90° version, though. Hopefully the 71-73° range (parallel to the top tube) would be ok. For horizontal extension, your options are plentiful - Salsa is a good choice. You won't need as much vertical extension if you get a stem with positive rise, so the shorter quill length on the 90° Salsa might actually work out fine. I'm pretty sure Salsa also have a 105° version of the SUL, so that's also an option.

i'm a little bit confused. it sounds like the OP is using "90 degree" to refer to length. which is a mistake - stem length (extension) is measured in centimeters. Degrees are measurements of the angle.

jwind, maybe you could refine your question based on this, if i'm right about your confusion. are you looking for a stem of a particular length? or of a particular angle? or both?

Actually its measured in millimeters, because a 90cm stem would be long as hell, but its ok, we still love you.

I am also confused about if he wants it to be tall (raising it vertically) or long (extending it horizontally).
Wouldn't a 90 degree stem equate to a riser stem in (in essence) on most bikes?

...which reminds me of a story from the days of working at a bike shop and selling lots of roofracks and cargo tubs. i was explaining to one guy that the smallest one was 11 cubic yards and he got all confused and asked, "eleven cubic yards long?" and i said, "no, eleven cubic yards... volume..." and it took him a while to get it. i don't think he understood. later, he tried to get me fired, for something else.

if by 90 degrees you mean 73 degrees, then yes.

his question seems simple enough. he wants to get his bars up high. we wants a long quill length (i.e. big height) and a 80-90 angle (i.e. positive rise)

Look into a Nitto Dirt Drop stem. They have fairly long quills and I think are actually >90 degrees.

O.K. to clarify, I'm looking to get my bars up just a bit so something with a long(er) quill (yes the part that goes into the fork) and a STEM that has 90 degreee bend or a stem with an 80 (10 degree DOWN).
