I don't think these rims look that great either - I personally would not have them on my bike, let alone buy them. But I do like the fact that some new visual approaches are explored, as opposed to the usual logo-fest which is prevalent in cycling gear.
And yes skateboarding does stir one's creative nerve. An average skateboard kid will be exposed to hundreds of board graphics, interesting photographs in magazines, experimental videos, etc.. in the course of a year.
Most skateboarders I know have gone on to work in creative fields.
