i dont wear my chain because i dont need to speed lock like messengers do and i dont enjoy serious injury like messengers do
i suggest hefting one of these chains in a shop before you buy
i use mine mostly because it enables versatile lockability that lots of u locks lack

it took me less than 5 minutes to cut through a standard u-lock with an angle grinder the first time i did it, which sold me on the heavier u-locks. the extra material is definately buying you time.
another thing to note about that video is that they could position the chain wherever they wanted, which is not always the case in real life and could definately effect the leverage you would get with that cutter.
i've been considering a chain because its more verstile, though. especially when i go back to class, since i'll be able to lock to a lot more things..

Chains can get you locked to more things than a ulock and there is a technique to lock both wheels and the frame to a pole with just the one chain. I start with the back wheel right above the bike's chain, and pull the chain lock around the post and through the front wheel. My back wheel isn't slammed up all the way forward (which would probably make this technique easier) so Ive scratched up my front rim a bit. I feel like there was a thread about this recently on here as someone said they put the shackle of the lock around their rim so as to not scratch the rim. This has worked a few times for me but I doubt it would work with a deep V or anything larger than a 700x23 wheel.

I use a similar onguard chain, but I leave it at my regular lock up. I have a second one that I bring if I know I'm going to be locking up for more than 5 mins somewhere other than my regular spot and a wimpy cable lock that I carry all the time for all the quick/unplanned stops.

Except that it wasn't a Kryptonite lock. Here's what Kryptonite has to say about the video, and after looking at it I have to agree with them.

It doesn’t look like a 6-sided Fahgettaboudit link, more like a 4-sided link. Hmmm…if that’s not right, what else isn’t right with that video?
We are much more apt to trust truly non-biased testers who have honest to goodness Kryptonite products to test, like Cycling Plus. We also submit our products to test with independent testing agencies like Sold Secure, ART and a host of others. They aren’t competitors, testing is what they do for insurance companies. They are unbiased parties testing the products for a living. They are good at it, just like the guys at Cycling Plus.

I dunno about SF, but in NYC a lot of the hardware stores carry a "Tuff Stuff" brand heavy chain that's like the big covered Krypto one but 1/3 cheaper. Physically it looks the same (square links, weird multicolored petroleum sheen, nylon cover) and since a lot of this is all about the look of having a massive chain it might be worth checking out. I have no idea what makes it cheaper but it seems pretty tough and hasn't failed me yet, knock on wood.

I generally use one of these:
It's a thick cable covered with metal rings. I like it because I can't always count on what I'm going to be able to lock to,and often one of the folks I'm riding with doesn't have a lock or only has a crappy plain cable. For bar hopping and shopping it works fine,but if I was going to lock up overnight I'd combine it with a mini U Sheldon style.

Cycling Plus's comment on the lock was this: Looks good, feels big and tough, claims the same- fails miserably.

I lost my mini-u after hitting a trolley track and am forced to use my 5' NY chain. Works well for long lockups, but on long rides or short lockups, it's a little much. I could also stand to grow a pair.

First of all, that's the wrong ratio to look at. It would be bike theft to bike or locked bike ratio.

One more time. The chain cut is not the chain the the makers of the video claim it is. New York Fahgettaboudit chain has six sides, the chain which was cut on the video has four sides, thus it's not the New York Fahgettaboudit as the video makers claim.
If they are falsely claiming to cut a New York Fahgettaboudit chain, what else isn't right on that video? Their credibility is shot.
