This isn't about whether or not you can multitask. It's about where your priorities lie. If you're doing something where people depend on you, some asinine thread on BF shouldn't be popping up when you're doing what you're doing. On your down time. Sure, whatever. Maybe even as a fleeting thought. But to go so far as to think about, then isolate and respond to something so trivial during an emergency where you're saving lives? If you really are a First Responder, Medic, and/or K9 Handler your priorities should lie with helping out those in need and not some POS thread on BF.

By "supposed" I mean I don't know whether or not you are what you say you are, but I am assuming your are in this instance.

I didn't question your competency. If I did, I would say something along the lines of "You're incompetent."

I'm going to try hard to give you the benefit of the doubt and attempt one last time to explain this to you.

Once again, I will direct you to my initial response. Rescue shifts can last for hours and hours. There are periods of downtime within a shift. It is a hard concept to grasp I guess for somebody who hasn't been there. I have shown time and time again where my priorities lie, that isn't even a reasonable question to ask. My priority is with saving lives, very obviously. I make personal sacrifices for this I'm not sure you'd be able to comprehend. But every second of a rescue shift isn't generally spend with 100% of my brain cells tunnel visioning on the task at hand. That is not only impossible, it is unhealthy, and it is bad for situational awareness. It is also doubly important for me to entertain myself as a K9 Handler when I work a disaster with my pooch. If I'm stressed, he'll eventually get stressed. I need to stay upbeat and somewhat happy in the presence of great human suffering and tragedy. Otherwise I will lower the drive of my K9 and the game he plays will stop being a fun one. To do this, I do let my mind wander from time to time and think about things that make me chuckle. Otherwise, I'm not doing my job well by not allowing my pup to do his job well. Not sure what else I can say to help bridge this concept for you. Maybe this seems obvious to me as somebody trained to a high level of tactical and situational awareness. I don't find an internal comedic dialog to be a distraction. In fact I find it improves my performance, my K9's performance, and keeps me awake and on my toes. It is something I can instantly switch off if the need arises, and switch on if the need arises (often this sense of humor is an important piece of the bedside manner puzzle). I've said it before and I'll say it again. Humor helps prevent PTSD, intense tunnel vision and stress for hours and days on end helps to cause PTSD. PTSD is a serious wound I don't take lightly.

Ah, so when you mean saving lives, you're actually referring to the entire time you're responding to an emergency? Seems like an odd way to put it but I see what you're saying.

It shouldn't seem odd at all. But I guess you are so far removed from the process, that it is really that hard for you to grasp. Take Katrina, the act of saving a life didn't begin or end when patient contact was made by rescuers (who were teams formed of local boat owners, Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Services, Search And Rescue, US Millitary, etc.). It was a process, one that involved risk from the moment a rescuer got up in the early morning to the moment he or she went to bed at late at night. For instance, both my K9 and I were both injured on separate days while clearing houses that were negatives. In other words, while we were confirming that there were no live victims left inside a structure with detectable signs of life. Properly determining which structures or areas have no live victims is a very important part of the rescue effort which helps save both civilian lives and rescuer lives in the long run. It is part of the overall life saving effort, part of the team work that is Search And Rescue. This is just one example of many parts of a day during a rescue that carry some amount of risk, are part of the rescue effort to save lives, and don't involve patient contact. If I go to Jamaica or Mexico for Hurricane Dean, and end up perishing in a Chinook crash while on a logistics or supplies run, I've like to think I'd be remembered for going down while saving lives. But maybe we part ways on this kind of ideology. This will be my only post today, so snark away guys. That's what fixed gear riding is all about, right?

I agree with you. I've said what I wanted to say, and received a depressing education on the personalities that seem to permeate in the fixed gear cycling social microcosm these days. Law Enforcement Officers and their supporters have had their say. Cop haters and organized government detractors have made their stance clear. The trolls have had their fun. No opinions seem to have been changed or effected, instead hurtful dialog and meaningless snarky quips seem to be the prevailing rule of thumb. Sad, but a sign the the thread has run its course. I'd say more, but I now fear any further breath would be wasted. This is my final post in this thread.

I'm glad you can judge the personalities of the entire "fixed gear cycling microcosm" based on responses from maybe 20 different people.

Also, I think you would sound a lot more credible if you didn't come off as tooting your horn on every other post about your work experience. I know you're stating examples most of the time, but still... it sounds a bit tired and unnecessary by now. After reading through all of this, I'm wondering if you have issues with yourself and need to proclaim your validity to others.

That and he'd sound more credible if he actually had a clue what he thought he was arguing against. Every post he made was redundant and like you said, tooting his own horn. Practically everything sailed over his head, and I guarantee this kid couldn't hold an argument in real life, and the anonymity and time delay presented by the internet gives him great cause for relief.

And that's why we have threads like this. The internet allows people to say things that they may not really feel, but they do so under the cloak of anonymity. Get used to the fact that all over the web, there are guys doing nothing more than waving their giant internet penis.

It hasn't bothered/changed/affected me, it shouldn't matter to you. Sounds like you have more important things to worry about anyway.
