Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed platforms - :(

I had to ride my not quite finished yet Fixie to work today (slash in my roadie tire). Still don't have straps or clips for the pedals. Man, I don't know how anyone can do that on platforms. It just sucks. Then again, I've only ridden 4 miles total on the fixie. A couple times it almost through my foot off the pedal hitting bumps and what not... partially a habit of me coasting over that sort of thing on the roadie.

Side note... I think I'm gonna like this fixie business
Started out with a 44/17, might down it alittle to 41/17 for putting around w/ the g/f and getting used to it, but will probably settle with a 46/17 eventually so I can still keep up on group rides.

I rode with flip flops on my clipless pedals the other day (stupid yes, but whatever). It was only to the local bar and back, but still...it can be done.

It's really, really dumb to ride without clips or anything to keep your foot on the pedal, unless you're just cruising around at a slow speed. If you're bombing a hill and you loose your footing you can easily break your foot, ankle, or shins.

Those metal studs shall end up in your shin/calf someday.

If it can happen on a bmx with a freewheel, it can easily happen fixed.

edit: just curious though, what is your reasoning for riding platforms? clips and straps aren't that expensive, and are way faster and easier.

There are ****ups who ride around brakeless and freewheeled too. Doesn't mean it's not really really dumb.

Too late, I already have some in there from BMX.

I had a pair of egg beaters, I tired them and didn't like it. I love riding platforms and that will never change. I have Primo pedals on every bike I own, regardless of the kind of riding it is. It's really not that hard to stop or control. I backpedal, skip, or put my foot in the tire in emergencies. I've been riding a brakeless BMX bike really ****ing fast on the streets for about 8 years now, so switching to the pista was no big deal.

I ride every day to work on platforms, 1 mile each way, and I go home for lunch. And I ended up doing 12 miles yesterday on my fix geared too cause I was bored and didn't feel like going back for my road bike. Guess if the gearing is too low you'll spin too much on the downhills and that can get dangerous, but I have 48/16 gears and am fine most of the time.

It definitely not a good idea if you're starting out with platforms though...

And platforms with no brakes? Thats insane...

I have platforms like those above on my BMX, and I also have the gash in my shin to prove it. To the bone baby. Slipped a pedal and it freewheeled back around to my shin... ouch.

I once forgot my shoes when going to a ride with a friend. Ended up doing 25miles in flip flops... but that was on the roadie. Still hurt the arches of my feet by the time I was done. No way I'd flip flop fixed platforms anywhere further than my driveway (although trackstanding like that was the FIRST thing I did when I put it together )

I don't have any video.

If you think it's that much of a stretch just ask anyone who rode with me in the Evil Alleycat in cincy.

pull on top tube to keep from coming out of your seat while resisting. its worked for me on one of my bikes i ride with platforms. i rode for two years on them. i like skipping though too much so iv got the toe straps on most of my fixed bikes.

I have nearly identical bmx pedals on my surly 1x1 (also white, silly kentuckians) and a nice golf ball sized knot on my shin from a few weeks ago that's still going strong, at least the purple ring around it went away...

Louisville is full of scrubs. Come represent in DC, Philly, NYC, or Boston... Son. You probably can't even keep up with the fair weather riders up here.

Or 1-legged skid ******ry and that lot.
