Hairlessbill, Is that the top-tube protector from Velo-Orange?

SKV11000 09-23-07 09:25 PM

I guess I should post my outfit right now. I'm trying to get this thing in our photo studio and get some buttery photos of it. The color is really odd, when I'm out riding, it looks dark turquoise. In photos, it looks lt. blue. Anyone else notice this?

Here is my build: Sugino 75 BB and cranks, Sugino Messenger 45t chainring, EAI 17t cog, Izumi Econo Track Chain (for easy running), Deep V laced to Formula, Shimano Headset, & Modolo stem with $5 chopped flat bars wrapped with Oury grips...oh, and Surly Tuggnut to keep things taut.

Certain things are temp for sure (stem & bars).

Yep. It was a bit of a pain to install and it doesn't wrap completely around the tube at the bottom but I still like it.

I don't ride for coolness points, I ride for $$

that stem is only one in parts box I had, so for now, its what will be used

street cred is worthless, can't spend it nor buy it

Yeah, right. We all know you're a total ****ing hipster pedex! :p

P.S. It's hard to tell from the picture; is that the light blue Fizik bar tape? The bike looks nice. Very minimalist.

double sided spd's work pretty well

I've read 25 pages of this thread in 2 days now! I still need some answers from anyone who has one. If you don't want to answer, fine but please don't be a jackass and tell me to go back and look again thru the 25 pages, thank you. I've got a bikeforum group bike coming next week - its a matte black angus w/1" headtube (so its not exactly the same as what y'all got). Anyways:

1)What BB size did you guys have the best chainline with? 103? 107? (BTW I'm using a sugino RD). Sheldon says 103 on his website but what did u guys do? I've got a new 107 that I was gonna use. I can't find anyone who really uses a 103.

2)What size seat collar clamp do these require?

3)Did any of you get a frame-saver treatment? Is that worth it? Never had a new frame before, just conversions.

4)Are these bikes sized small. I ordered a 62cm and i normally ride about a 60 because I heard IRO runs small. Is this true?

Thank you for any help to any of these questions and for not being a little smartass twerps. Peace.

Igneous Faction 09-30-07 11:59 PM

1. Use the 103. That'll give you a 45mm chainline, which bites. A 107 will be bad. I'm no longer a fan of the RD's because of this.
2. I can't remember.
3. I've never bothered on any of the bikes I've owned.
4. Yeah, my 56 was the same size as my 53 KHS.

I_luv_hooters 10-01-07 12:11 AM

which crankset for this bike?

So, if the sugino Rd bites, what crankset and BB combo will be the straightest and most silent for these IRO bikes? Is the IRO crank any good? thank you.

pedex 10-01-07 12:23 AM

I used a 103, its fine, 3mm over the distance of 2 feet isn't much deflection, on top of that do not assume all cogs are the same, they aren't, they vary as much as a few mm's sometimes from brand to brand as far as chainline goes. So you can install the right BB and still not get a perfectly straight chainline. Its no big deal.

as far as sizing goes, the top tube is a couple cm's shorter than seat tube

seat clamp= 31.8 I think, dunno for sure, I used the one that came with it

frame saver? no thanks

I_luv_hooters 10-01-07 12:44 AM

OK, lets ask it this way: anyone have a silent and perfect chainline on these bikes? what were u happy with and what BB do u end up using?

bonechilling 10-01-07 12:48 AM

I used a 107 with some old Sugino VP cranks and a DA cog, and my chainline is totally quiet and almost perfectly straight.

silent yes, perfect no, it isn't going to be perfectly straight, get over it, and riding it you will not know the difference

I used a 103 sugino BB and sugino cranks, its perfectly fine, I am happy with it. In my opinion you are making a mountain out of a mole hill here.

I_luv_hooters 10-01-07 01:19 AM

i'm not making a mountain, jerky. my noisy-as-hell IZUMI Model V is buggin the ***** out of me and it cost $70. I don't want it wearing out like it is. When i switch all my componants over to the track frame nect week, I want to get the BB right. If you don't want to answer, don't. but don't try to tell me how to feel or what to ask on a msg board where others are glad to share their opinions. move on to somebody else's post. but thanks to the other helpful guy.

In Absentia 10-01-07 01:24 AM

I tried both the 107 and the 103 and the 103 gave me a better chainline. With the 107 I tried the chainring in both positions and the chain was constantly trying to derail. I haven't had any problems with the 103 installed; I can just tell that the chainline isn't quite perfect by looking at it. My drivetrain isn't anywhere near silent (it's also not insanely loud), but I'm using EAI cogs, which are reputed to be noisy in some situations, and a PC-1 single speed chain, which is specifically made to allow less lateral deflection. Also, when I put the bike in my workstand and spin the pedals, I can hear that almost all of the noise is coming from the cog, even though the chain meshes with it just fine, so I'm not worried.

I_luv_hooters 10-01-07 01:34 AM

Ya weird. My noise is coming from cog area, too. I've currently got an RD w/the 107 BB and durace on one of my old conversion schwinn bikes. Yet the cheaper Bulletproof crankset is completly quiet on my old miyata. I don't want a cheap Bulletproof on this IRO I've got enough dough to get a different crankset. thats why i'm open to hearing what people were happy with. Its is sooo nice when it's quiet and dialed in. Thats what I want and i'm not married to sugino - perhaps another crankset is what i need if i want perfection.

pedex 10-01-07 01:36 AM

then buy the campagnolo record track crank and BB, that's about as close to perfection as can be bought
