I think everyone's problem is that you just dont ****ing get it. You still clearly dont understand.
If it took you 20 minutes to discern between right and wrong in this situation then something is wrong somewhere. Like, in your brain, deep, deep inside your brain.

It wasn't literally 20 minutes, I didn't really expect anyone to take that time interval literally. 20 minutes is my stock time interval, and when did 'gettin all righteous now' and explaining yourself become the same thing?

At my work's bike rack there's always a few people who lock only their front wheel to the bike rack, leaving everything else unlocked. I used work time to make drawings in Paint on proper locking technique and left it on one of the bikes, and it worked, the bike hasn't been back since :).

See, here is my thing...

Perhaps, if people started just ignoring the fact that things weren't locked and just respecting personal property, perhaps one day we all wouldn't have to lock our bikes up. Yes, I am being idealistic, but it is just my thought. I know this will never happen in the States, but there are other countries out there where you can leave things outside and they don't get stolen. It reminds me of a good friend of mine who grew up in Canada and never locked her door and would just leave her bike sitting on her porch. The funny/sad thing is after all those years of never locking her bike in Canada it got stolen here while it was locked up properly outside. Pity. Again, I know it is idealistic, but maybe one day we can leave our bikes in a rack all day and comeback to it at night without locking it.

i carry a small U lock, and i don't lock the front wheel. if i took a road bike out and you stole* my front wheel i'd be pissed. if you were stupid enough to leave your number i'd probably **** you up for the huge inconvenience you caused me.
furthermore, i ride my bike to make it to places on time. if i were on my lunch break and eating and come out to find my wheel gone because you wanted me to know how a quick release mechanism works. i'd want to kill you. i know how a QR mechanism works.

the only thing you need to know. Some idiot shaking my bike gently by the bars and seat to see if it was locked securely was surprised when he found me standing beside him. He said "Oh! I didn't know it was yours!" I said "Did you know it wasn't yours, ****tard?" and we knew where we stood.

Also, you didn't say anything about leaving a phone number in your original post. You, correctly, classified your desired action as "stealing".

People do what they feel to be safe on any given day. As someone mentioned earlier, do you *always* lock up everything completely? Seat? What kind of locks do you use? How many? If I can defeat your locks, should I do so to teach you the lesson that you should take your bike inside with you wherever you go?

Do you lock up your bike inside your house? If not, should I break in and steal your bike to show you how careless that is? I imagine you don't have bulletproof glass on your house windows, so really I'd be teaching you two lessons for the price of one...

what if someone already stole the rear wheel? is it okay to steal the brakes?

If the point you were trying to make is that you are a ****** and need a good thumping then I believe you already know the answer.

its probably been beat to death in 3 pages but:

if the persons riding their bike and locking it up wrong why would you disable them from riding their bike? that guy would then be using his car for the next however long till he buys a new front wheel.

i've thought about taking bikes off my campus but thats only after i see a couple things, the main one being a rusted chain on a bike that hasn't moved in at least 3 weeks. but even then i leave a note offering to buy the bike first to give it a better home.

i think even taking his wheel off is kinda crappy for a first move- i would say, leave him a note, that says 'lock your bike or it will get stolen' in a place he won't miss (like taped to his seat) and leave it at that. if after he gets the note he's still not locking up right, he doesn't care so you shouldn't either but that doesnt mean his **** is yours.


as far as leaving your number... you were kidding right?

i almost feel bad about how your threads turn into slugfests with pretty much everyone against you (skid salute, anyone?), but then i think about it for about 20 minutes and don't feel bad at all. i don't claim to know the "fixed gear mentality", or even if there is such a thing, but it seems to me that whatever it is, you've got it wrong. your threads don't have to be helpful, most aren't, just try to keep from posting about things that would make other cyclists think "****, those fixed gear guys are ******bags, i'll continue giving them no respect." if you can't do this, maybe someone should steal your computer to teach you a lesson.
