yeah this is just an exercise in somewhat-legal semantics.
I'm me ain't no lawyer neither, i'm be a *****-fied english major.
wiki calls it "the conspicuous defacement or destruction of a structure, a symbol or anything else that goes against the will of the owner/governing body" and that conspicious word is where the intention comes in. they go on to say that in criminal stuff, "Private citizens commit vandalism when they wilfully damage or deface the property of others or the commons"
the nature of whether or not it's a crime is different, obviously intention doesn't matter on whether or not the destructive act is a crime or not, it's just a different crime and not called vandalism.
like i said, semantics.

require the perpetrator intends to achieve a particular consequence, rather than
to simply engage in the prohibited conduct.
I think I don't really care if the idiots as this track intended to create skids or not, they should
be forced to clean it off in the hot sun while listening to Abba or something equally punitive.

good point. i think that there should be skateparks built for skateboarding and long sweeping wide hi visibility park trails for skidding and have them both be free to use by anyone as long as they're being moderately safe.

Just so we are clear, are you or are you not condoning what was done at the velodrome in question? Because it sounds like you are calling into question the moral compass of others before stating what you own is.

A couple months ago I laid a 40 foot skid all the way across a cobblestoned bridge at the house of a Super Rich guy that I was working for. Then I looked at the mark and realized it might not be the bestest PR. It buffed out quickly.

That sucks. i'll half to ride over there in the next few days and have a look for myself. on tuesday nights i spend half of my time watching the races and half of my time talking to that crowd that doesn't watch the racing. i have a hard time thinking those guys sitting out on the lawn would be stupid enough to do that. sure, they are hipsters but at the same time they seem to really respect cycling and don't seem like the type to vandalize the velodrome. my vote is for some people that don't hand out there regularly.
any word on how much the repairs will actually cost? we can charge a few bucks more per person for the bike swap and even have a donation box. might not cover it but it's a start.

Somebody needs to post a picture of this damage. I am curious as how bad it is or if this just being blown way out of proportion like some many other things. No matter what the extent is, it is not cool to abuse property that is not yours regardless if the damage is easily fixed.

I was just going to ask that. I know that I am slightly embarrassed to just watch racing that I'm not actually participating in, so I cannot imagine showing up to the velodrome just to drink beer outside the track. That's absolutely pathetic.

At least they didnt spray stupid tags all over the banks.
My home city spent $500,000 on a rad concrete skate park and the first week it was open some crack monkeys sprayed some of the worst looking graf ive ever seen in my life all over it.
I don't know if they're SUPPOSED to get graffed up, but skateboarding and graff are from the same 4 elements, no denying that. I would be totally pissed if a half million dollar skate park (that i wish was here) was bombed by some sloppy taggers (the first halfpipe I ever built was hit up with a pretty sweet piece actually, but I was still pissed it was on my ramp and got it off). Now if the city brought in TWS/TMF and a graff crew from France and did the entire thing at one time as an opening ceremony, that would be the absolute best.
When I started skating 18 years ago (and up until I was maybe 15), I wasn't really paying attention to the damage I was causing from grinding/sliding/waxing ledges of new and existing businesses/properties. Once I did realize that, I built all my own stuff and pretty much have only skated that for the last decade. As for the bikers, I highly doubt they didn't realize exactly what they were doing...although maybe they're young and dumb enough. I know I used to climb fences to skate spots to get my early footage and not think twice about it.
Overall, I'm not too sure the skateboarding and velodrome scenarios are exactly the same, although close.

concrete skate parks are suPPOsed to get graffed up! If you ain't like someone's work, go over their piece and get up yourself! ...I can only imagine what you mean when you say crack monkeys
