OP: In this "heart to heart" tell her that you don't want her to be pressured to ride, not that if she doesn't ride that you're breaking up. If her riding a bike is that important to you, you need help. Its nice to be able to do things together, but if you want to date yourself, you are better off masturbating and hooking up with randoms. You are never going to find the person that is exactly the same as you, so find a person that you enjoy being around and that you like. Let her be herself.
OP: you two have nothing in common? and you live together? yikes!

listen to what everyone says and don't pressure her. instead go on bike rides and tell her what a great time you had, things you saw, etc. i'd think that would be much more encouraging.

as a side note, an ex of mine would never bike ride with me because she was "embarassed" at how out of shape she was and didn't want me to see her having a hard time (yes, she had confidence issues!).
that makes me wonder. She didn't like tennis because she she says shes not good at sports and didn't want to be embarrassed I wonder if it the same thing were she doesn't feel comfortable and thinks she is going to fall and embarrass herself or something. That's what she really means by "scared". That's why she is fine riding behind our apartment but not out in a more public place. I get it now.

oh and btw yes we really have nothing in common, for real, and we see each other about 2 hours a day.

also, wouldn't it suck to get her riding only to find out riding with her is really no fun...a slow gruelling pace that makes your crotch start to burn and she gets annoyed and then starts *****ing about it being no fun and how scared and tired she is.

i'd try the idea of incorporating bike rides into stuff like movie and dinner or running errands or going out to the pub and getting real drunk...oh wait, that last one doesn't happen until she gets really good at riding.

when i first started riding w/ my guy I used my old cruiser that was my uncles in the 70's..

then i got this sweet bmx (that was WAY too heavy) and rode that everywhere..

then we found an old folding bike behind our neighbors and fixed it and I rode that one for a long time..

then my guy got a track bike and I got his old mixte hercules conversion and that thing was super awesome..

i now have a fuji track that i use everyday and am about ready to order my beautiful bob jackson..

i started out on a cruiser on the sidewalk and slowly transitioned into tearing up streets on my track bike.. give her time, and if she is actually cool, maybe she will too

First, I agree with those that said you shouldn't push her, and maybe try to find a common hobby. Not something you hate, but perhaps something neither you NOR your gf have tried before.

Second, I somewhat understand her fear of riding with cars. I don't like that, either, even though I think I'm an experienced cyclist. Here in Helsinki, luckily, one doesn't have to, usually, as there are so many bikepaths.
So in that sense, I can sympathize with her - riding with cars is scary.

If you want her to get into cycling, you have to remember that it's ultimately her decision. And then, instead of rding on the street, try to find a desolate place, perhaps an empty parking lot somewhere, or an unused (or seldom used) airport or such, and there teach her how to ride correctly. Always without pressure, trying to make it a fun experience for her. Let her ease into it gradually and without yelling or tensions.

I don't think a tandem is the solution for someone who is scared, being on a tandem is weird for the stoker cause they have no control and don't always know what's going on. Try renting one before dropping any coin on the idea.

How about a nice ride around a lake on a paved bike path, complete with a picnic in the sun? Seems like it would remove a lot of her anxiety triggers and throw a little romance in the mix.

Wow...

Look, you can't do that.

Besides, the post you deleted made me laugh so hard, some teriyaki sauce went into my lungs (damn, that was not pleasant). I was not offended one bit, it's just good fun! Seriously man, you should relax a bit. Seriously.

the fact that the op even hoped to attain relationship advice from an online bike forum destroyed it before it should have even begun.
now look at it.
