Thanks. I've been considering converting the rear to fixed as well, however I am concerned about it's strength in such an application. Not to mention it has a broken spoke and spinergy is impossible to get parts from.

Conti Grand Prix 3000. Good luck finding it in this color though....

Iro Mark V 62cm, the frame is just stripped with clear coat. Was going to paint it but really like the raw steel look.

It has clear coat on it, won't rust anymore than a painted frame.

Youre wrong.
Ive done this and known other people who have too.
Unless its clear powdercoated, its gonna happen. Slowly places will appear. Itll look like veins at first.

That does look really dope. Does it cost more to get a clear powdercoat as opposed to a standard colour?

Can you give us some more details on how you did it?

deathhare 02-08-08 09:05 AM

Its really easy. Go to any autoparts store...like Autozone and get aircraft stripper. Spray it on your frame. About 10 minutes later you can wash the paint off with a hose pipe. It basically falls off. Then clean well and dry well.
Spray clear coat on. Many coats will help it last longer.

TheKingFiphtin 02-08-08 09:07 AM

Hey Murdak, if I were you I would definitely look into that clear powdercoating. I love the way your bike looks, and it would be a shame to have it rust out. How many coats of clearcoat did you use? I've seen bare frames before that haven't rusted out, but I don't know what they used. I have a friend who just clearcoated a bare frame, but he did around 15 coats. I'd think that would take quite a while to rust.

Sweet bike, though.

deathhare 02-08-08 09:33 AM

The main problem is that clear coat isnt designed to stick well to bare metal. It cant hold on and even many coats sometimes wont help because the base coat just starts to let go.
Ive done this to a couple of frames. It lasts for awhile, maybe 6 months or so depending on the weather. Then you start to see small 'veins' of rust start to spread under the clear. I guess it comes from some pin hole or tiny knicks. At this point itll get more and more in that area. Its not rot and can still be saved.

I recently read an article about how Rivendell may start offering clear powdercoating as an option for one of their bikes. It was in their periodical, early 2007 if I remember correctly. Apparently, it is not that big of a deal if you have it done by a pro. Motorcyclist apparently have it done to their shiny parts to keep them that way.

deathhare 02-08-08 10:20 AM

You can do it at home if you have an oven big enough.
Ive powdercoated stuff before at home.
There are cheap kits you can buy. I got one from http://www.eastwoodco.com/

Or a tiny little frame.
Seriously, how big an oven do you have? Do you take it to a Pizza shop and ask them to bake it up for you?
