Somebody's jealous they didn't think of this first.

But seriously, I can see this setup working just fine, but I'm also a visionary. I think it looks cool!

My own fixie / coastie:
Surly Steamroller
Soma "3-speed bar" (a.k.a. moustache bar)
Sturmey drum brake front hub, reverse lever
powdercoated Alex 700c rims, Kenda Kwest 38mm tires
Sugino crank / MKS pedals
Brooks B-17
Gearing: 48-18 which has proven to be just right, overall!
Fixie wheel: Miche track hub
Coastie wheel: Velosteel hub

Your bike looks good.
How are those bars working out?
I was considering them because I thought they looked similar to the Lauterwasser Bars but seeing them on your bike makes me think otherwise. They look good, but seem to bend forward more than I was hoping for.

Yeah, I saw them... after I'd already received the City Bar. *sigh*

Thanks. The reach forward is similar to drop bars. They are nice for riding fast, but I have thought about flipping them over so they are not as low.
The threadless stem spoils the vintage vibe, sigh.

Muttley: I thought about building a fixed gear with a drum hub. I am glad someone else did it. I wanted to do it with drop bars, but tektro is the only company that makes drop bar levers that have the appropriate cable pull, and they are ugly.

A random shot of my work in progress:

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...yataAlley2.jpg

1980's Miyata frame that was acquired by a bike shop and built up then sold to me. Its cool because the frame is brand new, I am thinking its was a blemished frame that was never sold to the public because I noticed a little misalignment with the rear wheel to rear brake hole I cant get straight. I love it. Up soon, some shiny chrome drops and a nicer looking seat.

I used a Tektro reverse (tri bar) lever. I think that the brake really needs a V-brake lever, now that I have used it. I tried to contact SA beforehand about which lever to use, and they couldn't tell me...

Just got through building up my Surly Cross-check SS. Use it mostly for commuting and light trails. Custom powder-coat...not stock.

Couple more from that night (pics came out grainy so they only look good in this size)

And a close up of the frame and my drunken idea to put duct tape stripes with black pinstriping. Actually came out looking kinda cool.

those Miyata frames are money. I built one up and sold it, but it rode like a dream for a conversion. might want to check out that misalignment though..

johnprolly 08-06-08 10:16 PM

[bars look sad] ;^)

MIN 08-06-08 10:23 PM

sad and not installed correctly.

YellowFixedGear 08-06-08 10:49 PM

So. The other day I got this
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../frejus001.jpg
A 1960s Frejus track bike with all the fixin's. Was in the guys garage for over 15 years untouched.

Tonight at work I decided to see how the chrome was under that reddish orange paint job.. This is what I started to get! Looks like the paint actually saved the chrome!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ks/frejus2.jpg

He also had the NITTO NJS drops wrapped so well that theres not even a scratch on them. Those bars are well over 20 years old!

Will post more pics when I strip the whole frame and clean it off. :metal:

NoOneBetter 08-06-08 11:19 PM

^^^nice find.

cc700 08-06-08 11:20 PM

amazing!

andre nickatina 08-06-08 11:28 PM

Strip that fork and ride it chromed. Or did you plan on doing that to the entire frame/fork? Looks real sharp. Those are the kind of bikes that LBS's hang in a display case in the window.
