88 Paramount

Just finished this today. First attempt at a fixed conversion and never even having ridden one until today. Drove down the valley where it was warmer and free of snow and no traffic. 25 miles and it feels like Im learning how to ride a bike for the first time. Gotta think about starting, stopping, how you approach hills (up and down!). Never realized how much I coasted while riding w/gears. This is going to be fun

Dude, that weed leaf is hilll-a-rious! But the cops are totally going to search you ALL DA time now. That is actually the nicest pot leaf graphic ever. Riding a bike after smoking, that's like got to be hard!

cc700 03-06-09 09:07 PM

not bad.

tvvat 03-06-09 09:32 PM

almost easier, you might say.

Downtube placement slightly more desceet

cyclefreaksix 03-06-09 11:34 PM

Hey Northbend, that's sick! It's also the most pinkish bike I've ever seen!

********************?? That doesn't make sense to me... It seems pretty apparent what he did

northbend 03-07-09 12:19 AM

Yea, it's pink alright. In a Rapha Metrosexual way I guess. The levers are Suntour Superbe Aero's. When I bought the bike it had the full Superbe group on it but the lever hoods were a gawd awful hot pink and that was the first thing to come off. I tried to find some reasonable replacements but nothing looked right. I finally gave up and decided to wrap em up in cloth tape. I like the way it turned out.

That Paramount is almost too nice to convert, esp. with the original grouppo being Suntour Superbe (which I love).

It does look awesome and I bet it rides great. Don't sell the original parts! I've got a Waterford built track bike and would kill for a Paramount roadie.

northbend 03-07-09 01:09 AM

I originally bought it for my son as a birthday present (ebay). It was damaged in shipment. Friggin FEDEX. The fork was bent out of alignment and there is a small ding on the inside left fork. The seller and I came to an agreement on an adjusted price and I kept the bike. I bought a Pinarello frame and built up a bike for my son using mostly modern shimaNO components but he liked the Superbe calipers - all the other components are on the Paramount or stored away in the garage. The Frame sat 7 months - then I got tired of feeling bad about it so I took the frameset down the Elliott Bay Cycles (Davidson) and had them look it over. They said the fork could be fixed good as new for 400 bucks (most of that is paint if you can believe it) or re-aligned and made completely safe for 80. I went the 80 dollar route and decided then to go fixed. I have 2 nice geared road bikes (a '99 Merlin Extralight and a '77 Bruce Gordon) and really fine MTB ('99 Yo Eddy). I wanted something completely different and this bike fits the bill. The nice thing about conversions like this. You can 'undo' it if you change your mind later. In the meantime, I can enjoy its new life as a fixie. Far better than it sitting mothballed in the garage. Bikes should be ridden right? Maybe someday when I have a clear consience to spend money on real restorations, the Paramount will get the full treatment but until then this is good enough for me.

So they are aero. From the look of them without hoods, I thought they were the older ones. Nice bike BTW.

i think i could use on on my Mark V....

surly tuggnut will work on most will work on most frames

croscoe 03-07-09 12:09 PM

Warfordium - Those are Sinz tensioners. They do the same thing as the Surly, but @ $10/pair it's a much better deal. No bottle opener though if that makes a difference.
