Yeah they make fixed/fixed hubs.

And why they produce fixed/free is still beyond me.

Or for us lazy old folk that sometimes would prefer to ride with some coasting, but still don't want gears.

novielo 09-05-07 07:24 AM

can you put a cog on the freewheel side??

deathhare 09-05-07 07:25 AM

You can put a cog but you cant put the lockring. That part is quite important.

bward1028 09-05-07 08:06 AM

but you can put a freewheel on the fixed side. hence the illogical aspect of fixed/free

I also think it would be pretty sketchy to just tighten down a cog on the freewheel side and pray that *****e doesn't come off. Is that true?

First of all, I'd presume that it's fixed/fixed, which does exist. Secondly, lockrings are not entirely common nor necessary in track racing. There are no circumstances on the track where you apply back pressure, short of a wreck.

thanks i'll try that any way it will be for a 13t or less (48x14 on the other side) so braking/skidding was hard to acheive anyway.

and it will be for racing, i'm thiking of trying a criterium on a fixed. no braking power will be used on the cog. i'll try to save some power like that

cc700 09-05-07 08:14 AM

even with a huge ratio like that, it will pop off the second you put backpressure on. it's a bad idea.

Considering the catastrophic crash/pile up that could ensue if someone's cog unscrewed its pretty much stupid not to run a lockring. Some places require them.

sounds like you've got it figured out. if you're concerned, throw a little blue (NOT red) loctite on there and then mash up a hill and let it set. use the brakes to stop the bike, profit.

edit: oh ****, i thought you said time trial. i would NOT recommend trying a crit on a fixed gear. the cornering is usually too tight and there are too many people around to pick the lines you want. this is a very bad idea and could very likely end up in you crashing, getting your ass kicked, or both. see if you can find a time trial instead.

I doubt anyone will check, and I don't know who is sanctioning the race, but a freewheel is a requirement for all USAC road-races, as I recall. Lots of people race criteriums on single-speeds, though.

Also, racing a crit with a fixed gear would be pretty dangerous, given the high-speed tight cornering generally associated with crits. Pedal clearance would be a serious issue.

bward1028 09-05-07 08:48 AM

+1
i wouldn't want you in my race, no offense

novielo 09-05-07 10:17 AM

you guys are absolutly right!! didn't tought of the cornering issue!! i'll check for a time trial instead or get a 13-12t freewheel, if there's any... sorry for the ofr-thread subject...

my favorite everyday ride. built almost entirely of stuff i had lying around, i only had to buy the miche chainring and post from work. it's probably about due for a bath, too. if anyone could help me put a year on the frame i would appreciate it.

edit: yeah, i know, the QR... i guess someone felt ok borrowing it. good for them.

+1 I still think fixed/fixed should be the standard

goldenskeletons 09-05-07 12:33 PM

wow, that bianchi was mostly stuff just lying around??
holy crap, i need to start hanging out where you hang out more often.

also, i initially thought that it was set up as a road bike. if you were to put some gears and derailleurs and what have you on that bike, it would be an amazing looking road bike!

TRaffic Jammer 09-05-07 12:38 PM

Chances are you'd not be allowed to go fixed in a crit race to begin with.

edmondraptor 09-05-07 12:48 PM

Had my bike at work to day to finally put an emergency/long road ride brake on, I was really liking brakeless but any ride over ten miles or winding country roads was impractical, and I want to do some more long runs like 50 miles or so. It was great though ripping down the three huge hills on the way back from work through Castlemilk when I was in East Kilbride, spinning like mad and skipping at 25 miles an hour to stop for the lights at the bottom!

First pics since I built this bike, but the frame is second hand and had no head badge, just the letters "GPT" on the seatsaty caps and an Italian BB. If anyone knows what it might be that would be awesome.

So the "Kona" on the side is just a sticker?

deathhare 09-05-07 02:45 PM

Maybe its from Chile
