Mavic Ellipse
Mavic Ellipse: are they wotrth it? Can any of you who have had these give a quick review/comment? I've read about a 46mm chainline. Any comments on solutions for this? Are these durable strong wheels for street use? Thanks. I'm about to possibly pick up a pair at a good price and want to make sure they're right for me.

I love mine.
I beat the hell out of them and they look sharp too, no chainline problems for me.
make sure you get a .5 mm spacer because the lockring might not butt up against the cog all the way causing a grip of problems.

right. i realize it has its own proprietary lockring. but i was wondering if the .5 mm gap was from using someone else's lockring, or if it meant that the design was funny and had a gap even with the right ring.
or maybe a DA or something else wouldn't even spin on, hence my confusion....

Hmmm just maybe you started it somehow? Wondering if you possibly the writing style in your email was the same as your day-to-day banter on here. I've found that you generally are very sarcastic and agressive with funny/rude comments. Some people don't do well w/that. Can you post what was said just for entertainment?

I was actually looking into getting this wheelset a couple months back, so I tried to read as much as I could about them. Almost every thread I read, they were saying that the only problem people run into is that the lock ring sometimes loosens (and I'm still not too sure why), but my LBS said that every once in awhile you just have to tighten the ring. Other than that, those wheels are nice and I still wouldn't mind picking some up.

while some of the aspects of those wheels impressed me, i'll never really be in to them. i know people who love them - they say they're fairly light, very strong, have smooth and resilient bearings.
however, the handful of people i know who use them have experienced a handful of problems that require some above-average wrenching and parts aquisition, meaning that having a bike shop that knows these wheels and can quickly get small parts from mavic has been crucial. broken axle, broken spokes, effed bearings... a proprietary lockring that leaves something to be desired, an odd chainline (which is actually the least of my concerns - it's easy to respace a chainline by getting a different bb spindle).... just enough to make me wary.
not to say that everybody experiences these problems - that's a ridiculous generalization - but i've seen enough problems that i wouldn't want to deal with them.

they were designed to hols a freewheel as well as a cog ,stupid i know thats what the mavic people told me,
the .5 spacer cures all woes.
if you try to crank it tight with out it you might damage you hubs as i did........twice.

The $5000 Mavic IO/Comete might be a tad better. But yeah for the money they're great, very strong, just not the easiest to work on.

Just so you know, I did do a search before I posted this. During my search I read through a lot of threads, some of which were more than 2 years old. I didn't get all the info I wanted by doing that. I got what i needed by asking here. Also, I'm not so sure people really want an old thread brought back to the top so i can ask questions from people who aren't here anymore. Perhaps I'll just look through you entire posting history to read your mavix ellipse story since you say it's worth reading. But I'm happy I bought these wheels!

OK, hopefully somebody who has done this will be able to help me. I have ordered an alien (same as andel) crankset. They claim that with a 107 BB you'll achve a 42mm chainline at the chainring. Mavic Ellipse rear cog reportedly sits at 44mm.
How can i get the alien chainring to be 44mm also? Should I try a 109 BB? Thank you.

oh, and BTW I asked Matt the seller about being a d!ck to somebody on an email. He was totally puzzled and said it didnt happen. Sounds like maybe you were being a little sensitive? Good luck w/that.

don't sweat it I ran dura ace cranks and suntour superbes with no problems. and even ran them on sugino rds for a bit. quiet ass hell with my chain and cog set up. my friend ran them with campy cranks all set up for 42 mm chainline all real quiet

what do you guys mean by adding .5mm spacers so it won't strip..care to explain because I'm thinking about getting a rear.plus what do you mean by locking won't butt up against cog..how would the spacer help
