Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I love my $500 Pista. I put about $600 into it since I bought it. There's nothing wrong with it but now I want a fancier frame.

OK, so I can see why people would go for a Kilo over, say, an IRO or Surly complete. Save $200-300 or so. But if you're going budget, why is the Kilo any better than The Hour? Is it just the fork or are there other component/geometry issues? I had an Hour, it was great. I liked it better than a Mark V i picked up later. I have a group buy Rob Roy on order (snob appeal, curved seat stays, cheaper than Kilo frameset), but if I hadn't got in on that, I'd get another Windsor in a heartbeat. Why are people paying $50 more for the Kilo over The Hour? Tell me it's not just the fork...?

If you have the two bikes right next to each other (as I do right now), it's a night and day difference. The Hour just looks flimsy and cheap in comparison (and the black one is ugly as sin.)

There are just 3mm of extra spindle sticking out on the non-drive side. This can annoy some people who are particular about q-factor and such. Note that you'll need to mount the chain ring on the inside of the spider in order to achieve a workable chain line for track hubs.

Thanks for the info shants. I'm not too picky over the extra 3mm, and besides: I kinda like the way chain rings look when they're on the inside of spiders. Call me weird.

But you say workable? Should I be scared when I'm putting this thing together?
