i use straight gauge steel spokes. and i am quoting retail prices in my area. if you know how long of a spoke you need (do a google search for a spoke calculator), you can order them online and maybe get them cheaper. i use an odd hub/rim combo and dont have that option.

spokes are generally a dollar a piece depending on which type you plan to use as there are straight gauge and various butting options available. Labor for building wheels I have seem or heard anywhere from 30-50 bucks depending on the way the wheel is laced and difficulty involved.

Its cheaper to lace them yourself and then have the LBS tension the spokes.
Not that you are a moron, but any moron can lace a wheel...its easy with a good set of instructions (easily found on the internet) and requires no special tools. So if you are on a budget its an easy way to save some money.
Or you could learn to completely build the wheel by yourself...thats what I prefer, but it does take some time and effort and initial investment in some tools. If you expect to build and/or repair multiple wheelsets, doing it yourself is worth the effort.
