When I was a kid, I used to use a hammer and an old screwdriver (I had a screwdriver that had metal running all the way through the handle.) Worked fine, but did tend to gunge up the notch in the lockring a bit.

Peter White Cycles has the Dura-Ace chainwhip/lockring tool for $36 (couple bucks cheaper than other places online I've seen it) - has the spring on the chain rather than magnet/nothing, which I believe would help...

Re: lockring quality, I've got the stock lockring from IRO (Formula IIRC) - is it a good plan(tm) to swap it out for a Dura-Ace quality one? I'm new to fixed riding, so I'm not likely to be thrashing about just yet.

I as well have used many a flathead screw driver and bludgeoning object for lockring removal. If you have a big screwdriver with a fatty plastic handle on it flip it over and use the handle as the force applicator. works beautifully.

I have a follow up question:
I have the Park HCW-5 (i think thats the number)
and I can't get my lock ring off, I can only chip off a piece of it accidentally.
What am I doing wrong?
Also how do I get the cog off and do I need to grease/lube anything on there?
I am trying to put a different size cog on my fixed gear.

Most people use a chain whip to get cogs off, you can probably get one for about 15 bucks from your local bike shop. If you are applying pressure to the lockring remover in a weird way you might chip off bits, otherwise, I'm not sure why it would do that. give it a shot with a screwdriver and a smacking tool (ie. hammer, another screwdriver, rock etc.) I believe you could also get the cog off by holding the wheel and backpeddaling, though I'm not entirely sure how healthy this method would be. You could probably also just use a piece of chain and a leather glove for hand protection and pull on the cog with that for grip.
