do it— and pick up a conical burr grinder if you don't already have one. blade grinders can't give you uniformly coarse grounds, which you need for proper extraction without too much silt.

Ewww. That ain't tea, it's an "infusion."

Back to coffee, I'll add a vote for burr grinders. Amazing difference in brew quality. Plus, they don't heat up the beans like the blade grinders.

Freshly roasted beans are my other priority -- it's sad how quickly the quality clock starts ticking down once they're roasted. Esp sad b/c I used to be able to get truly fresh beans, and now not so much.

I did the barista thing for a while when I was younger and I just came pretty close to taking a job with a commercial espresso machine importer.

Pedals don't get turned without coffee.

Seriously, it's like I'm more disappointed by my home coffee than the coffee I drink while out because when I go out the places use burr grinders, the beans are roasted like yesterday and the espresso is far better than anything I could do. One could spend a lifetime mastering the perfect shot of espresso.

More on the Portland thing...

This place has literally turned me into an upper echelon, proudly acclaimed snob. I'm alienated with relatives everytime they want to go out to Starbucks, or brew me a cup of ****, and I politely deny and inform them that their coffee is crap. It's hard but once you drink Stumptown on a daily basis, you never go back to Folger's.

The best thing is single origin cups. I've figured out my favorite and least favorite coffee regions of the world because Stumptown puts out a different origin coffee every day. South American stuff (Columbia, Guatemala, etc.) is my favorite by far. Real Hawaiian Kona is great too. Medium roast every time.

For all of those people that like the french press, try to find a shop that has a Clover:

It makes a single cup at a time using vacuum pressure and a fine mesh filter, which allows you to use a finer grind and not get the sediment you would get from a french press. Unfortunately, it costs $11k, so not many shops have one yet. (but mine does)

Also, for those that like iced coffee, you can make toddy concentrate using a french press if you sandwich a couple layers of paper filter where the mesh would normally be, combine grounds and cold water (55g coffee/liter) and let it sit for ~14-16 hours.

For the record, I have been working in coffee for 3+ years and I own an espresso machine, a french press and a turkish coffee pot.

Downtown Stumptown is the courier hangout. Lotta hipsters with nice bikes too. A lot of the staff ride as well.

Belmont Stumtown has that bike-street parking, where there's like 10 racks in the street where a car would normally park, it's usually pretty filled up as well. Coffee drinking and bike riding is a lot more fun than drinking coffee while trying to drive in a zombie haze on the way to work and spilling it on your crotch

Whoa, thanks for the heads up dude. I've been searching for a good shop, everything on campus sucks and the only decent place I found was Perugino on Williamate St. but I swear the quality was way worse the last time I was in, so I'd just buy beans in Portland and bring them back... I'll check this place out.

Nothing better then the last cup of the day from the breakroom pot. Industrial grade.

Nope. Jet black, so thick you almost need to scrape it into the cup.

I hate everyone and vice versa without coffee. I think I'd die from the withdrawal.

Straight double shot. Unless I didn't buy good beans, in which case milk to dull down the worse flavour.

With first generation American parents and both sets of grandparents from Germany, we never had a drip pot in the house; always perked and pretty much after every meal. Started going to Italy on a regular basis for work about five years ago and have since sampled some great (and some not so great) espresso. I'm not much for American or pressed coffee even though I've been told it "tastes" better... I guess it just depends on what "better" means, though.

I've got a two cup and a four cup moka, a four cup brikka and a Breville espresso machine that I got as a gift and use maybe once a year.

My homey was telling me about a thing called an Aeropress, it's like a french press but you use air to push the coffee/water through a filter. Anyone have or use one of these?

I typically drink upwards of 6 cups a day. I didn't have any today until after i ate dinner and I was useless.

I just use a cheap 4 cup drip maker that my parents gave me when i went off to college. Usually use Yuban coffee because i like it/can't afford anything fancier. Though when i'm real broke(most of the time) i'll end up using my meal plan and buying like Folgers from the school market. Tastes like **** but gets me to class in the morning.

But then again, today I am sick so i've had like 3 cups of green tea.
