It is a unique masterpiece. Especially, as you say, the environments, the background, the details.

Kinda want to see 10,000 b.c. though.
edit: Ridley Scott had nothing to do with 10,000 b.c. I thought he did. My bad.

Blade Runner was ahead of it's time, and ironically, still is. It was recently re-released on DVD with several different cuts of the movie, as well as random trinkets and documentaries (making-of, etc) in a shiny silver briefcase suitable for a nuclear bomb or many stacks of cash. I haven't actually seen any of them, and have only watched snippets of the documentaries, but it is very well done from what I've seen. They actually got Harrison Ford to be interviewed in it (which is apparently hard to do these days). My favorite parts are the complaints about the production of the movie, which was a complete disaster.
I've seen both versions of the movie prior to this re-release, as I have the original recorded on tape (it's slowly dying) and the director's cut on DVD. The DC is obviously superior. The original theatrical release was very commercialized and dumbed-down with Harrison's condescending voice-over (film-noir detective style no less) and the "happy" ending. The director's cut was much darker and requires several viewings to fully understand. It's as close as you can get to putting Phillip K. Dick's demented mind on film.
I could write for hours about the impact this movie had on me, let alone all the "did you notice THIS" comments I could spew out. I'll start a Blade Runner thread in Foo...
Anyway...
1. I wasn't bashing fixed-gear riders, I used to be one, but I read "The Rider" and can't get road-racing out of my mind, so now I ride gears. Yes, I rode with a brake while riding fixed. It's a choice, not an option.
2. My friend did not purposely jump in front of the cyclist in the hopes that he could tell a funny story to his internet pal. He was just crossing the street. It obviously was not a jaywalk since he knew the cyclist ran a red light, running a red light would not be an issue or had been mentioned had he been hit jaywalking.
3. I can positively say "yes" to the question of whether or not the accident could have been avoided had the rider had brakes. However, it was not the focus of the thread, I merely wanted to hear his side of the story, just in case my friend was in fact bull****ting me. The brake-less bit was merely to help identify who the rider was. My friend has no knowledge of bicycles, he didn't even understand what I meant if the bike HAD brakes or not, at first. I know its hard not to go on a completely meaningless tangent on this forum, but please try?
4. When I say "ran a red light" thats exactly what I mean. I didn't mean "squeezed through a yellow" or "caught the tail-end of a red".
5. The cyclist didn't strike (punch) my friend, it was the other way around. The cyclist "got in my face" according to my friend, and then he subsequently hit the bicyclist in the head. The cyclist was mad at HIM for getting hit by a bicycle rider, classy.
6. Yes, it is your responsibility not to hit pedestrians. There are obvious exceptions to this rule, but they are uncommon and most likely have no bearing in this case. We all want automobile drivers to respect our right be considered "vehicles", correct? How come this goes out the window when you nail someone while riding your bike? Sounds like a double standard.
7. I don't think my friend is a "lemming", but that's because I know him. I'm not sure you can actually "personally attest that all BU students are lemmings". This coming from a guy who rides fixed-gear no less.
8. My friend hates stupid people. Someone hitting him while riding a bike and then blaming him for it is pretty goddamn stupid.
Regardless, my thread was a tongue-in-cheek attempt to find the evil, wiener-sucking, baby-eating fixed-gear hipster scumbag who hit my friend. That's it! Why the hating?
P.S. Deckard is a replicant.

Props to responding after all this muck.
I just watched bladerunner tonight: the environments are amazing, reminds of "how movies used to be."
Sadly, the plot was ****.

i love blade runner. don't get me wrong. but after seeing children of men, i have to question which one was a better(for lack of a better word) futuristic dystopian sci-fi flick.
i kinda liked children of men better.
should they even be compared?
discuss.

a) Deckard was a replicant.
b) A dredlocked dork on a mountain bike running a red almost hit me yesterday in Boston and then a woman on cellphone almost ran me over a block later.
I think the nice weather yesterday made everyone in Boston go crazy. It was sunny and above 40 for the first time this year so everyone and their mother came out to play.

2. I didn't imply that he purposely jumped in front of the cyclist for a funny web story. I suggested that right of way or not your friend is a tard for walking out in front of a cyclist. Who cares if it was a jaywalk? It makes no difference at all where you were crossing when you got hit.
3. 100% arbitrary.
4. It doesn't matter. I realize that from a legal standpoint the cyclist will be at fault. He would be at fault had it been a green light (at least in NY). The point is that if it was a car or bicycle or a bus or a truck or ****ing spiderman... your friend walked out in front of a moving object and while the laws may be on his side... physics is not. You AND your dumbas5 friend LOSE!
5. I like how you bash the cyclist for being "classy" for "getting in ur buddies face" but then your friend hitting them back is classy? From a legal standpoint... now ur friend is going to jail for assault. Classy.
6. It is my responsibility not to hit pedestrians JUST THE SAME as it is the pedestrians responsibility to see and avoid. When Im flying and Im at 20,000ft in a Cirrus (small single engine plane) I am ASSIGNED that altitude. If I see a 737 coming towards me, guess what? Im not going to call up Air Traffic Control and say "Uh... you guys want me to deviate?" Because I would get to about the "uh" and then proceed to kill innocent passengers. SEE AND AVOID! RIGHT OF WAY MEANS NOTHING! PHYSICS MEANS EVERYTHING!
7. Are you saying that fixed gear riders are lemmings while in the same sentence going on about how your friend must NOT be a lemming and that we have no basis for suggesting that "all BU students are lemmings"? Because, why is it ok for you to suggest a large population of people are lemmings and not ok for us?
8. "My friend hates stupid people" Whats he doing hanging around with someone who hears something about his friend getting hit and then attempts to seek vengeance through a message board?
THAT is pretty "goddamn stupid"

there's three pages of finger pointing goin' on over here over some vague hearsay. none of us were there. who cares what we think?
this thread should have been a lot funnier than it is.

It was probably one of his fellow students that bought a bike three weeks ago after coming to the realization that cars are bad and brakeless fixed gears are cool.

The big backlash here is probably due to the fact that many of the posters here, would've [if not already] acted the same way through their own inability to handle a bicycle, and in blaming a ped as a way to not take responsibility.
