i deal with this exact sort of blind lemming behavior being mentioned every day of the week. i haven't hit anyone but it nearly happens every day, someone will literally be STANDING in the bike lane WITH THEIR BACK to oncoming traffic, having a conversation with someone on the sidewalk. this, and sheepish riders on mtn. bikes going the wrong way down a bike lane characterize my daily commute to class.
i'll be damned if i don't know how to handle my bike after almost two years of riding.
and seriously, the backlash is so self evident it barely needs to be said. the OP was condescending, confrontational and didn't have good grounds to base either off of. going to an internet forum to question who ran over his friend? i thought that type of irrational thought was strictly saved for the hippies on the bikeportland.org forums...

See, thing is, Fixsters need as much condencension as possible.
Builds character.
Teaches 'em humility.
Someday, They'll get to learn how to fetch.

I'm not up to anything, really! To be perfectly honest, I thought some of you would get a kick out of it. The only stories we read on this sub-forum are related to the cyclist being wronged. I thought this would be a nice change of pace. This forum, other than the Advocacy and Safety forum, has most of the "cyclists have rights!" threads/posts. I thought this would be a nice example of why some non-cyclists don't think you belong on the road...And how easily it can be avoided. Maybe I should have posted this in A&S...
Does anyone remember the thread of the cyclist who was upset that his company didn't approve of him riding his bicycle inside the building where he worked? That thread was chock full of win.
Although I find EivlEvo's insinuation that my friend somehow though the "right of way" law would physically protect him very hilarious. Oh, and his incorporation of physics.
I'm sure my friend would have calculated trajectory, speed and braking distance properly to avoid the accident HAD HE KNOWN THERE WAS A CYCLIST ABOUT TO HIT HIM.

Well I don't know about everyone else but when I am speeding up to thread the needle on a crosswalk full of foot traffic I will run into anything in my way... that's right, if you are in my right of way I will hit you. The law protects my brakeless/helmetless actions.

Also in Total Recall.
I feel as though this requires you to specify what exactly you consider "many of the posters here"? I have in fact hit a pedestrian. A beautiful one. It was my fault because I was going way to fast on a bike path. When I said "on your left" she moved left. I only hit her going maybe 7mph. Anyways... I wouldn't say that "most" people don't know how to handle a bicycle. I think that in some cases (like this one) the accident could've easily been avoided had the ped saw the cyclist.
However... on the same token, I'm sure if the cyclist saw the ped, they could've also avoided it. But its hard to avoid something that just "pops" out "unexpectedly" like that. This is why getting doored is so difficult to avoid.

This is probably true.

You know, I read fark threads about cyclists and a common complaint by drivers there is that we cyclists are generally the ones at fault in collisions, since we act like idiots when we are on the road. Also, they argue that since the laws of physics are on their side, what the traffic laws say is fairly irrelevant. Of course, this is a dip**** view.

I simply explain, fine... if you want me to pull up, unclip and stop at every stop sign in a traffic lane. Then, wait my turn, push off, clip back in and begin accelerating I will... but I would be impeding traffic FAR more than if I simply paused logically.

True. There's a few areas in America where cyclists are allowed to do rolling stops. I think the BTA in Portland occassionally talks about trying to push said legislation here. It's pretty sensible and reasonable in most intersections, but as always the individual themself needs to exercise good judgement.

so i hit a ped..
i was riding to class full bag and frame strapped to me. crossing a cross walk. a guy stepped in front of me, so i turned to the right and last second he just jumped into me. i was going really slow so neither of us were hurt. I apologized snd kept going. sorta scared me.
anyone else hit a pedestrian? was it a result of a penguin dance?
