I caught the jack@ss redhanded...

Well done! However, I would have loved if you knocked him out and u-locked him by the neck to a pole. And taken his pants.
Has anyone ever actually done this? Sometimes I wish I could see it happen.

I went to the bar with some friends, and locked up outside. 2 locks, no issues. About 3am, I go outside to finish my beer and go home. I unlocked my bike and moved it to wall beside me while I changed shoes and watched the idiots. As I am finishing my beer, this young, tight jeaned wuss keeps checking out the bike. Certainly he notices the sidi's and broken in messenger bag beside the seemingly outta shape old dude....but no. As I am sitting there, he picks up my bike and starts to roll it out into the street. I am literally right on his heels. He makes it about 20 feet down the street when, I guess, he figures he can swing a leg over an ride off, when I grab him.
As I was following him into the street, my friend colin called out to me and I gave him a quick finger in the air to acknowledge him as I was on dudes heels, and colin immediately saw the situation and started my way.
I grabbed dude by the throat and pinned him first against the wooden fence by the dumpster and forced him to the ground......by the throat, 1 motion. I was about to annihilate this little hipster. Fortunately, a bouncer saw me take him down and pulled me away before I lost myself and started pounding. Colin was coherent enought to get out without yelling that dude was trying to lift my bike.
He was screaming that it was his. I said that I had just unlocked it with 2 locks that were in my messenger bag and dude screams that he has the keys. HEHEHEHE> I whip out both chains with my keys and beg him to open with his keys. of course no luck.
He's caught. Begging for forgiveness. No deal.... while we are waiting on the PD, dude takes off running, and Colin, MY BOY, 42, HALF this dudes age runs him down and drags him back to justice.
PD shows up..cuffs dude and off to jail he goes. YEEHAAAW Score one for the good guys!!!
I am so jacked up on adrenaline right now its not even funny.

Awww, yea...this was a perfect opportunity to fulfill BFSSFG's sadistic desire to see one of these mythical u-lockings documented--and carried out by a fellow member, no less.
Still, well done. Many younger people in your situation would've ended up doing something just as dumb or selfish as stealing a bike.

was gripping him by the throat really necessary? I mean, sure he was trying to lift your bike, but that doesnt make it chill to grab him and throw him to the ground by his throat...thats assault, you should have just grabbed his shoulder and held on until the cops came.

If I were to steal someones possessions (in front of them), I would expect at least a little assault and battery if I was caught in the act...
I say the kid got off lucky - could have picked another bike and ended up shot lol.

unnecessary violence displeases me, we should talk sometime. I mean, I like how when it is an authority figure people go nuts on them (ie. that bag of ****** rivieri on youtube) but when it's someone else it's completely justified to choke hold someone and throw them to the ground. Now I dont approve of his scum baggery, because bike theft is lame, but there are definitely better ways to deal with the situation. Just because someone is a scumbag towards you doesnt make it chill to be a scumbag back.

I understand that people in the old days were lynched for even the suspicion of horse theft. Those times weren't all that long ago - and we've come a long way. There's something about both horses and bikes that really tap into the deep emotions of some people. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure what I would do if I caught someone trying to take my bike. I can't be entirely sure that I would handle it in a civilized fashion.

I think you're trying to argue a ******** point. If you want to go pansy when someone steals your bike, be my guest. If you're caught lifting someones ride, you're sure as hell not going to be expected to be treated with tea and biscuits.

I am a peaceful fellow, but come on. Holding his shoulder? #1, that's a great way to get stabbed or maced via the other hand, #2, it's pretty easy to shake someone's hand off their shoulder, grab the bike and vanish into the night, and #3, the guy pretty much gave his consent to be choked when he tried to steal someone's bike.
Awesome story, OP.

P.S. I'm curious as to the bike that was the victim of the almost-theft, pictures?

Glory? Perhaps the thief will think again before stealing another bike. He got off light as far as I'm concerned.

I think if the OP is as manly as he seems to fancy himself to be, he could put down a pretty good grip on the guys shoulder and hang onto him long enough that other people would get there to help. If he's in front of a bar and isht starts going down people are going to come see whats up mad fast.

If you decide to detain someone for stealing your bike, you better understand that unless you completely overwhelm them you are likely to be injured (or worse). And for the love of God, PLEASE don't rely on strangers to step in and help if things get out of hand.

I'm sorry, but I really don't think you understand the way these things work. People always respond in kind. Force is almost universally met with force, UNLESS the person on the receiving end is unable to do so. That is why when a cop decides it's necessary to disable an individual, they do so in a fairly brutal manner. That's why when they decide they need to fire a weapon at someone, they shoot to kill.

I wouldnt expect "some hipster kid" to be one to put up a fight over a stolen bike, I think had the OP grabbed an arm and said "hey, give me my bike" the kid probably would have argued it's his, at which time the OP would have asked the kid to provide the lock keys, and the problem would have been solved.

Many years ago, I was living out in Whistler, BC. I was a climber, as were many of my friends. Gear kept getting stolen from cars parked at the Chief in Squamish. Police couldn't care less. The summer moved on, and more and more gear got stolen. Eventually, some climbers set up a bait vehicle, then made it look like they were heading up the trail to the climbs, but instead they waited in the bush. Sure enough, the local scumbags who were responsible for the thefts soon showed up. What ensued was some of the roughest vigilante justice you've ever seen. No police were called. No arrests were made, but the thefts stopped.
