Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? i guess if you're running brakes they would be FINE, but they just seem dumb, like running clips without straps. what's the point.

caye. iunno i thought they were stiffer or something so they wouldn't need straps.

any good relatively inexpensive upgrades from the toe cages i have right now? i mean i have some stock **** that comes with the masi speciale. suggestions would be nice so i could know what to look for in toeclips and why they're good.

Just ride those ones until they break. Good straps (preferably laminated ones) are more important than blingy toe clips.

ps what it is mayne?

just get some steel mks 15 buckarooni's.
avoid alloy especially if riding brakeless...

steel sounds good. i was looking into these

my pedal is starting to mess up already. like the lil slots that the straps go through on the actual pedal, the strap already broke through one of them. and i'll replace it eventually anyway so what's a good inexpensive upgrade?

I assume you're talking about upgrading the pedals? MKS pedals are a great value. GR9's are good for riding in street shoes but they are kind of narrow. Sylvans are good, but the bearings are too dry out of the box and need to be repacked with grease and adjusted, but are great once they are lubed and adjusted properly.

As for the clips, I honestly like wide double gate plastic clips. They are ugly and won't get you any style points, but steel clips rub on my big toe through the toebox of my shoe, which hurts alot.

I had a pair of the stell mini clips pictured above and they are easily the most worthless thing I have ever put on a bike. They are not an easier to get into than full sized metal or plastic clips and provide very minimul (and uncomfortable) support. I would just go ahead and get regular metal toe clips. After my experience with htose I just got some MKS steel clips from Ben's Cycles and they work great.

I would get regular toe clips and straps. They really aren't very hard to get into once you get the hang of it. I have used ALE alloy clips and MKS steel clips, they both worked just fine for me. I wear converse chuck taylors, so i can't feel the toeclip rubbing against my toe through the toebox of my shoe. At any rate, you shouldn't have to pay any more than $15 or $20 for a quality pair of toe clips, and they will be worth more than that to you.

i've heard of people using them offroad. they're better than platforms, but not really useful on the road.

I had something similar on my vintage bike, they worked fine for a long time.

I think they were from 1989 and finally broke in late 2007

They were great for riding in normal shoes

yea the mks sylvan's are said to be like a replica of campy's

but yea the gr9's look pretty sleek and slim, and if that reduces the chance of pedal strike then i'm all for it. i'm still scared of pedaling around sharp corners after i ate **** on my bmx bike

My fixie (flatland grocery-getter) has MKS mini clips attached to MKS GR-9 pedals. The mini clips provide basic retention so your foot doesn't slide all over. They also help position your foot on the platforms to avoid toe overlap. The mini clips DO NOT help you apply negative pressure to the cranks like clipless pedals. If you have a brake, they can be okay depending on your riding style.

i have sylvan road pedals on my bianchi. i love em. but they don't don't grip the soles of all of my shoes well. my vans hold tight, my well worn tigers slip a bit.

i'd like a pair of silver streams though.

Yes - the MKS mini clips are metal. You can get them at benscycle.net for under $10/pair.

Doooo it. Blue Line Bike Lab (you know, on White Oak by Fitz) carries these in size Large if you want em on the quick. They also have GR9s there too. The same exact set up I'm running.
