if youre 6' and ride a 53, youre on the wrong size bike. handle bar width is dictated by the width of your shoulders, you will not get a decent answer from the internet.

You can't tell someone they're riding the wrong frame just from a height measurement. If you're on a 53 and ride comfortably don't worry about what anyone says. As far as the handlebars, I have been accustomed to riding 42cm bars but 39cm B123s fit ok, just shy of being a little too narrow when holding the top of the bars but the drops fit great.

I did a rough measurement of the distance between the outside of one arm to the other at shoulder level and then rounded it off. I ended up buying a 40cm and the width feels perfect.

As already mentioned, there is no way anyone could tell you what size to purchase, especially based on your height. I say try what I did and see what happens. Might work for you.

Well a 53 would be probably small for him no matter what his proportions are. At 6', if he is normally proportioned, both the TT and ST will be too short. If he has short legs, then the TT will be too short. If he has long legs and a short torso, the TT will be fine but the bars will be too low.

measure from the center of one shoulder to the center of the other and whatever length that is should be the width of your handlebars.

True, but within reason. There is a statistical normal distribution for frame sizes and human dimensions and for a good reason. At 6 feet, a 53cm is plain and simple outside any normal distribution. I dare you find me one professional cyclist in the pro peloton 6 feet tall on a 53 frame. You're not going to find it. (and they tend to ride on smaller bikes than average.)

Back to the bars, I see the OP found some he liked. When measuring road bars, I tend to go with ones that I can almost fit my shoulders between. The next size up is too big. Most road riders prefer a slightly 'open' position to allow easier air-intake. TT bars are not as wide as as riders prefer a more aero position. Track bars you really should measure the space between the 'divets' near the cups of your shoulders. I am not talking about the visible ones right before your cups. This gives a more 'straight-on' position. Just depends on your riding style.

At least someone has a decent response.

I have longer legs relative to my torso (5'10) and ride a 53/54. The reason is because I can always increase the vertical height should it be too short (ST), but I can never adjust the TT length. Since I have a shorter torso, I have to have a shorter TT. My friend who is marginally taller than me (5'11) rides a 56cm and loves it. It really comes down to your body and preference. He also loves to ride a bike that 'feels' larger. As far as the bars being too low, just buy an stem with an increased rise. So many people (in general) are all about the negative rise stems. Just flip it over. You may look fast, but I'll pass you from the pain you're in.
