a hipster is...
if you want to know what a hipster is go to one of the dive bars on division avenue between ashland and damon in chicago. i lived in this area and loved it. i walked into one of these dives a few years ago and the music literally stopped. mind you when i walk into a bar in small town america i get looks for being "different". but these cats looked at me with eyes that screamed "hey, you're not a hipster, get out!" most that i have met are very friendly, but it is obvious that in their attempt to be different they ended up being just like everyone else trying to be different. lets face it. we can all be placed into a category.

If you look at someone and think, "did they wear that because they like it or because they like it because they hate it?"
I used to have the whole "Oh man isn't this shirt terrible? I have to get it! It's so stupid it's great!" thing going on real bad. After a while I realized I had no identity and relaxed a whole lot.

Fear not, there will always be shirts worth buying because they suck.
I think, and I'm about as expert as anyone else here, that a hipster is a certain cultivation of a look, rather than a sincere joy in dressing a certain way (or listening to a certain kind of music, reading Proust, etc): it's the cultivation that matters, these things are placed into a certain context. If you moved to Williamsburg 10-15 years ago versus moving there now, etc.

they should include discount coupons for nautical star tattoos with the purchase of a bianchi pista. and a neck bandana, whatever all that is about.

I sold my fixed gear because I realized that I hated the image of people that I tended to see riding them (and I looked just the same).
Stereotypical Hipster Has:
Facial hair
a cap (not a hat)
rolled up pant leg
bandanna around neck
lots of opinions about society
ironic T-shirt (small)
one or two tats
an oldschool record player
a lot of interest in music, and "finding" bands
...a fixed gear

because it's easy
i find it akin to all the guff swimmers got in highschool because they shaved their legs and whatnot. 98% of them were the straightest guys in school, but guys still called them queers because they were on the swim team. know what i mean?
personally, i have much more respect for people who convert, or build up new, their own bikes, rather than buy them already done. doesn't mean jack if you ask me. just how i feel. I AM ENTITLED TO THIS!
i for one am as much a road bike nerd as i am a hipster fix rider. and with my upcoming hip surgery, i could be considered a premature fred, too! i also have a classic bmx, but the last time i hit a ramp was easily 15 years ago. boys will be boys.
