Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Or you could just read the existing thread that is all about gear ratios.

To be honest, after several attempts at reading the post you quoted I still have no idea what that guy was talking about. The best way to determine the best gear ratio for your terrain is to go ride it. In my experience, 49x17 is good for speed on flats but pretty high for any serious hills.
