Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? a friend of mine has for sale a Soma Rush with this:
soma rush track bike 59 cm top tube, made of tange prestige steel, horizontal dropouts, and track geometry, surly lugged steemroller fork, thompson stem with 1 inch shim, cane creek headset, sealed shimano bottom bracket, 170mm vuelta cranks, 46 tooth sugino single speed chainring, 16 tooth dura ace track cog njs certified, velocity deep v rims (1 brown 1 green) surly fixed-fixed hubs, dt swiss spokes, kalloy seatpost, kmc gold chain, nitto bullhorns with gel bar tape, dimension track pedals with cages. I could get it for $515, it was built about a month or two ago, and am wondering if you think this would be better than getting an IRO Mark V?

Thats what i was thinking, better though than a new Mark V IRO? I like the Soma it seems like a good bike and for almost $100 less than the IRO it might be a good deal. Other thoughts?

That's probably a better deal than the IRO unless you plan on changing a lot of the parts. If you like it just the way it is (close to it), then it's got some decent parts on it, especially the wheels.

you think the velocity Deep Vs are better than the IRO's? I'd be getting the all balck IRO Dark Matter wheels. I do like the fact that the ones on the Soma come with Surly hubs.

ANYONE know about the Vuelta crank? Good bad?

anyone? What would you buy, a semi used really good condition Soma for the $515 or an IRO Mark V for $589 (all black wheels are $20) plus $40ish for shipping and then i'd have to buy pedals for it for probably $50 for MKS and cages and straps so the IRO would ultimatley be closer to $700

Vueltas are OEM components that came on maybe Pistas in olden days. comparable to truativs. They're fine.

I would go for it, if it's a month or two old. The rush frameset and fork is close to $500 new by itself, I believe. Surly hubs are not my faves, but for that price I wouldn't sweat it.

Here are the pics from the original owner, when i get the bike i'll snap some way better ones on my own. The seat and that light on the bar won't be with it/on it so i have San Marco Ods race saddle for it and will probably get a matching Thompson seatpost. We'll see how things go, im just really stoked on my first real fixed gear. Especially one like this for the price. Thanks for the help.

hahaha ride among us... hilarious.

that's a good deal unless it's beat, doesn't fit, or has been improperly built.

the guy that i bought it from works at a shop and built it there. I priced the bike out with all the parts (not including shipping to buy them) and the parts came out to be $1,085. I am pretty happy about the deal, and was comparing the geometry to the Kilo and they seem pretty close. Even though this is a 59cm it has a short top tube than a 57cm kilo which i was thinking about getting. The only changes for the bike right off the bat are a Forte Precision seatpost (cheap but i think it looks and functions good for $14) and a San Marco Ods saddle i got from Nashbar for $14. the future big plans for it are a Thompson Elite seatpost to match the stem on it, Sugino RD Zen Messenger crankset w/messenger chainring (44t), Dura Ace Lockring (if it has a crappy one on it but im thinking it will be pretty nice considering the parts on it) and maybe a 17t or 18t cog (since 16t is a bit rough for me) I also ordered som Redline chain tensioners for $6 and probably end up throwing some new bar tape on there and perhaps some other goodies. But when i get it, i think it should be fun enough. Thanks guys for responding so quickly, i'll post pics as soon as i get it.

Taking suggestions on what to do to it. (though i think its pretty set for me atleast) i'll probably upgrade as i need to. I think i did find what cranks are on the bike right now, here's a link if anyone is interested: cheap but look alright IMO for the time being.

Not to be a gigantic ******* but I like to point out that MSRP on accessories/components at a shop is usually around 2x the cost...

Right so he probably got some at cost, but i've talked to some friends who work at shops and i work at a backpacking/camping store, and the cost on bike parts isn't exactly 50% its more like 60-70% depending on what items are being purchased. Whereas in my store (all camping/backpacking/outdoor/snowboardin/skiing) cost on pretty much everything is 50%. Pricing all the parts out for me to build this exact bike would have cost me around $1,100 since i don't have the opportunity to buy items at cost (atleast not bike items) only camping/backpacking gear.

Well that's moot if the OP doesn't have access to prices that far below retail. Sure, the seller probably made some profit*, but the OP still got a good deal compared to building it personally.

*Edit: Well, maybe not profit per se, but the friend didn't lose as much as the average person would have.

answer: better
pick it up from him...it still costs less than iro, and if it's your friend surely you won't have to wait for him to ship it to you
