I can imagine the research and development people at Cannondale planning in their conference rooms:
VP: "We have a legendary track frame and our CAAD series aluminum road frames which the Capo is based on have several Tour de France stage wins! Why are our Capo sales numbers down?"
Marketing Analyst: "Sir, according to this analysis our market share has been dropping to the DIY sector who favors colorful chains and mismatch paint schemes."
Product Manager: "We've taken that analysis to heart and for 2009, we have a product line which cuts our cost, increases product appeal and grows our customer base to recapture the DIY sector! I'm am pleased to introduce the 2009 Capo: same as last year but with purple chains, lower cost 4-bolt mountain bike conversion crankset and trendy handlebars. Did I mention purple chains?"
Marketing Director: "By God! Revenues will triple! Brilliant!"

I didn't end up buying it cause I just didn't end up liking it that much...There was like little things about it I didn't like. I'm willing to wait for another one. I also think I'm a 54 instead of a 52 in the capo cause I felt cramped leaning over it. So I'm gonna try both sizes out once they get the new ones in.

It's not that big of a deal. Mark up varies on bike to bike from what I've been told from my dad's friend. I figure mark up is generally around 30% for most bikes, which would make the figure he gave in that ball park. Retail prices and whole sale prices aren't huge secrets. Just bike shops have to make ends meat and pay for rent and all the other expenses that come with running a brick and mortar store.
