UPS Lost my bike?

So I bought a bike from bikesdirect, the Windsor Hour, 52cm. It turned out that the 52cm was too short, and I just couldn't deal with it, so I went to my local UPS store (East Brunswick, NJ) and sent the bike back to Bikes Direct (Jacksonville, FL). I shipped it on a Tuesday and it was supposed to be delivered to BD on that Friday. For some reason though, it just wasn't. I waited through the weekend with no updates. This morning (Monday, 10/13), the tracking page of their site told me that it wold be delivered today. Awesome. At 10:30am I refreshed the page and now all of a sudden, it has no expected delivery date and the bike has experienced an "exception". Of course I didn't insure it because how could anyone lose a box that big and heavy? Now my UPS store has put a tracer on the package and I have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this problem before?

Here is a link to the tracking info page: https://wwwapps.ups.com/WebTracking/p...85700372701422

If you're going to buy from the Interweb, you need to be willing to wait for the Interweb to send you your goods.

If you click on "Exception" it clears things up considerably. They still have it, but it will be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. Could be a truck broke down, it got mis-sorted, the whole company ****ed off to lunch...

The point is, it says they still have it. Chill.

Sorry, its been a long 2 weeks without a bike, and the fact that my UPS store is calling me for info so they can trace the lost package is making me nervous.

- I just called the number and the person at the extension I was told to call ****ed off to lunch .

Here's a likely scenario. Rather than being put on the trailer for redelivery the next day, it was mistakenly put on an outbound trailer and won't get scanned until it reaches its destination hub. Could be 1-3 days. Then it'll be turned around to the correct hub and be delivered. Yes right now it's "lost" because it wasn't scanned when it was loaded in the trailer. It'll show up but it'll be late. The good news...you get your shipping charges refunded.

If that's the case, then I'm saving $36 by waiting a few more days. Thanks for the info.

I've had stuff like this happen. It usually turns up within a day or two. Lots of phone calls seemed to help in my case... if only to make it seem like I was helping the process along.

Yeah I've called a couple times but now they told me to call a specific person at an extension at their "tracking support line", but the person's answering machine picked up so i left a message. I figure leaving 50 messages won't help me much. Thanks.

Why wouldn't you get insurance?

It's like $1 for every $100 over the first hundred. $2 total for an Hour.

Maybe "exception" means they backed a truck up over it on accident

Actually, I was shipping the bike to Florida because Mike here on the forums asked me to. And actually, UPS did lose the bike, but luckily, they lost the bike at the address I sent it to . They still have no idea where it is but Mike told me that he received it he sent me a new bike that I'm going to be picking up today at my local UPS counter. So basically they lost it because they delivered it and didn't record the delivery.

hey, that's good. I've known folks with much more valuable UPS/DHL shipments get all the paperwork but no delivery....or get completely irreplaceable items run over by forklifts & have UPS/DHL claim the packaging was flawed. You're lucky. I fared well w/ my recent BD/UPS shipping also....the upshot of it is these screw-up cases are probably a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the volume they carry...they're just the ones we all hear about!

Glad to hear you got it sorted. I thought of this thread last week when I was having a bike shipped via UPS from the UK. Picked up Tuesday, but no tracking. They kept saying the bike was never picked up, but the guy I bought the bike from swore it was picked up.

Turns out I forgot to email the guy I bought the bike from the actual shipping label. After like 20 calls to the UK on Wednesday, I got a call from UPS UK stating there was a different tracking number, because the driver issued a waybill since I never sent the label.

I got home & the bike was outside my door! Next day delivery was sooo sweet seeing as to how I thought they'd lost the bike.

Yeah, there is a real heart-sinking feeling you get when you call and ask where your bike is and they are like "Ummm....somewhere in the UPS network! Thanks for choosing UPS!" But I guess we both flirted with UPS DANGER and lived to get our bikes anyway. Yes, I am so proud of us.
