Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

For what it's worth, I see an awful lot of people in NYC riding fixies with bullhorns, moustache bars and risers. I don't think it's all a style thing. I've even been considering putting risers on my CX bike because it's just so much more comfortable for me in traffic. I haven't done it yet because it's a much more expensive and time intensive swap (changing out brake levers and shifters), and I'm reluctant to give up the option of multiple hand positions and aerodynamic advantages on longer rides or windy days. However, whenever I have to ride primarily in the streets instead of the park or on the bike trails, I grab the fixie with risers.

i think your missing the point.

road drops are blatently the best choice for riding on roads it makes alot more sense, theres no comprimises and they have more advantages. using risers on a bike like this is like sticking some off road tires on you porsche 911: impractical and pointless.

the whole track bikes only for the track is silly, how many mtb reguarly see any real mud? track bikes work well on the roads hence thier popularity for city riding.

the visability thing is rubbish, road drops have a top section you know.

yeah you can ride to your trick place quickly, but what can you do when you get there, a few lame assed tricks which the bmx guys would laugh at. this type of bike is just not for doing tricks.

the main reason people have risers is style and lack of riding experience, some people are put offf drops becuase they see them as a bit scary. many of my friends have had to be usshered into using drops, but have then wondered why they did use them before. theres good reason theyve been the favoured bar for racing for 100~ years.

Many people have already disagreed with this opinion. As someone with both drops and flats, I see advantages and disadvantages to both.

my point was that no one has presented a decent contrary argument.

People like doing tricks on fixed because its a functional bike and the tricks are fun. No offense to any lurking BMXrs but I dont like riding thoes things more than about half a mile. I used to do a 4mi commute on one and cant tell you how awesome it was to get back onto a road frame.

On the subject at hand: some people are more comfrtable with risers. They are wider than drops usually and offer a perfectly functional hand position. Drops are nice because they offer the up top position as well as a few others. Im not gonna lie, I prefer drops over risers any day of the week and twice on sunday, but that doesnt mean everyone on a road/track frame should have to use drops..

I guess we had room for one more, eh? I got the answer to my question if a mod wants to step in.
