Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? 44x17

Who else rocks it?!

It's Soooooo nice!
I got a 3mile long hill I gotta climb everyday and I just switched up from 44x16.
Let me tell you, its amazing what a difference one tooth makes..
I only lost about 1gi and I travel 0.5 meters less per revolution but damn, was I bookin it uphill today.

btw 44x17 = 2.58 ratio at just under 70gi and still gets over 15m per rev.
I am stoked!

Heheh... how long are your crank arms? I always like it less than 70 gear inches even.

44x17 is fun, I run it right now but I'm thinking of going up to 46x17 simply because I don't climb hills and could use more speed.

Bikes: yes

lately i've been riding 46 18, fixed, and 46 17 freewheel. super lazy gears, which are nice for working and spinning and grumbling about the cold winds. i like it a lot.

this weekend i'll ride ss cyclocross geared 42 17 or 42 18.

hah.

i ride 46x17 as well, seems great for the occasional hills in brooklyn, plus a quick start from a standstill.

I like 48x18. It seems to be a good compromise between speed and power.

I'm riding ss 42x16 [69.2 gi - 170 cranks & 25 tires] & 48x19 [66.4 gi- 165 cranks/23 tires]. Fixed 48x18 [70.1] We don't have any bad hills around here.

44x17 here as well. Really nice for the hilly parts where I live and easy enough for me to skid seated without exerting too much.

I'm living in Seattle, plenty of hills, and was using a 44 x 17 -- fun.

I went up to a 46 x 17 on my new build and found that, while it's a bit tougher on the climbs, I'm not at a loss for anything and to the contrary as my legs get stronger I'm faster on the hills and on the downhills as well.

It's generally too steep to rock a 44 x 17 going downhill in Seattle most of the time, but the 46 x 17 is very nice.

Bikes: 70s Leader Precision w/Shimano 600 (road), IRO Rob Roy (Fixed)

I rocked 46/17 for a while, loved it but wanted more work/speed, so I put a 15T on the back and have had a couple of weeks on that and really love it. I like that I can't spin out and can just feed it to her [the bike] until I tire from strength rather than being out-spun.

When the snow comes down and stays, I'll probably pop a 17 on the back again or just switch to a 42 ring and run the 15. I ran 42/17 last winter with great results.

44x17, would never do it for me, I would be wanting more. I ride 46x16 and I live in a pretty hilly area. I am going to switch to a 17 cog in the winter.

I should totally post pictures of the hills I climb. Problem is they are so long(and twisty), you won't see the end of um..

But anyway, ya you're tough.

What would the diff. be if you achived the same ratio on larger rings/cogs? Would you just need more torque to get going?

I read somewhere that using a larger chainring and cog is more efficient.

40x15 (=2.67 ratio) because the ring i had was 40. works pretty well, i wish i could get a little more speed sometimes but i don't know if i'm willing to sacrifice the ability to climb and quickstart.

Bikes: A few BSO's.

49 x 17. Not many hills here in OC. Just going down from the Mesa to Pacific Coast Highway. If I get in a pace line with geared dudes I need 78 GI.
48 or 47 x 17 would make me happier but a chain ring is expensive, a good 144 bcd 1/8" is.

GI=Penis Size no matter which forum you go to!

I ride 44x18 cause I like to spin but I'm getting a 17 for the other side of the hub just to get more skid patches.
