I know you didn't ask me, but I've ridden a brooks in the rain plenty. Oddly enough, your ass covers it the entire time so it doesn't get very wet. Not sure what would happen it it just sat there exposed though.

When we ride fx brevets inthe rain we cover the Brooks on our tandems (B17/B17narrow/Proffessional/Swallow)with plastic bags we always have under the saddles - they are under the saddles to keep the water away when only the roads are humid.

lil help please...

calling all steamroller owners using stock forks

rather than start new thread, thought i could just ask here...

what front brake are you using?

i was really looking forward to using this 105 caliper on my new steamroller build, but the damn thing is 4-5mm short. as an experiment, i tried a rear canecreek scr-3l with an xtra long thru-nut & it does work, the arms are just barely long enuff. or...while i hate the thought of a 47-57 mm tektro, can not figure what else to use, considering i do plan to run cx tires on this thing occasionally.

other suggestions based on experience would be a big help & much appreciated, thanx...

If you have a set of calipers you can measure what reach you'll need and then go from there. You could do it with a ruler too but you'd probably want to deflate or remove the tire so it isn't in the way. Just measure from the hole in the fork to the center of your braking surface. The only long reach calipers I've used have been Tektros which as you said aren't the greatest

There is a simple solution to all your problems...

This was supposed to be my winter project, but winter's still two days away and I'm kind of in love. Gonna have to figure out how to deal with the wet season though.

Seeing your setup was one of the selling points on the roller, actually. That and a misdated, very cheap frameset.

I feel like Surly's are replacing Subarus as the Seattle vehicle du jour.

Can I put this here?

I need to take new pics of the rig...

Similar geometry as the steamroller, or at least jdgesus and I think so, but different dropouts and braze-ons for a rack. In hindsight I could of just bought a steamroller complete for much cheaper than building up a cross check frame, but I wanted more options I guess.

I think they would be great for a low geared "go slow" ss/fg

They belong on a beach cruiser IMO. Totally out of place on a regular bike. The steamroller used to make a lot of sense with the road drop bars and priced at $720, but now that they've dumbed it down and raised the MSRP to $820, there are much better choices like a Big Block and for nearly $400 less you can get a Kilo WT with fender and rack mounts as well as two sets of bottle mounts. Sorry to hate on Surly, but objectively they have just plain dropped the ball on this.

I like the width and angle for sure.
I have a higher rise stem on order as I like my bars about an inch and a half higher than it came stock.

so far, so good.

I would love a set of those bars for my newest build. But alas, it isn't a Surly.
