What tool would this part require?

https://www.benscycle.net/index.php?m...oducts_id=3470

To install that... which tool would I require? I tried to research it for myself, but I'm still uncertain. The bottom bracket is one of my final frontiers... But I'm determined to figure it all out.!

Help a newb!!

though, it'd be great if someone could confirm that.

also, i ask this because you're, as you say, a 'newb': your cranks are octalink, yes? and not square taper?

Well, no actually. The BB and crankset I had chosen were in fact incompatible! It turns out my crankset requires a BB with a square taper.

SO once again I'll ask the same question but for a different BB: Which tool would I need to remove this BB?

https://www.benscycle.net/index.php?m...roducts_id=552

When I look at all of the tools offered by Park Tool for BB I just can't tell which I should use for the above mentioned BB... :\

You will need a pin spanner... I believe it is the Park SPA 2 (red) or get the HCW4 which is a multi tool which has a box end for the fixed cup (36mm) and and pin spanner for the adjustable side.

You will also need a lockring tool which is something every fg riding persons should have anyways.

Yes...your LBS might carry these tools for retail sale and then you can take the bb in to make sure you have the right pin spanner / box end.

I figured it all out. I'm glad I posted this because it certainly illuminated my understanding of BBs and crankarms. Thank you!

And yes I am buying expensive parts. Don't judge me. :<

I came into quite a bit of money recently and am looking to build a bike by myself. Since I began doing the research for this bike I've learned so much and really enjoyed what I'm learning. And I'm not even half way done!

65r: of course it's a beautiful bottom bracket. but if he--and i don't mean this as an insult--if he wanted to buy an octalink bb for square taper cranks, what are the odds he knows the difference between jis/iso tapers, or the effects of different spindle lengths? you know? we've all been there in the beginning, i think. i'm just trying to help him out.

sgtsalt: if you're using sugino 75s, go for that bottom bracket. if not, well, tell us what you're using.

Nobody will judge you for buying expensive parts- we will judge you for buying them without knowing how they work or what they are for. It's kind of like buying a Ferrari when you don't know how to drive stick.

The BB you have chosen is a loose-ball bottom bracket- it is not sealed against water or dirt. It's possible to over-tighten the BB cups when installing and damage the whole apparatus, and it has to be disassembled, cleaned, and packed with new grease every year or so or after any significant riding in nasty weather.

I mean, it's your money and your time so you can **** it up if you want, but plenty of folks out here are making do with the cheap stuff and it makes us sad when nice equipment gets damaged by improper use.

I'm aware of the care it would take to maintain this piece of equipment. And I've thought about whether or not I should purchase a sealed BB. I live in a state which, every now and then, has some pretty nasty weather. I still have time to decide. Anyway, I'm not an idiot. So long as I'm patient, I can learn to do just about anything. We all start off completely ignorant right? At least I'm am making a serious attempt to educate myself.

I am a huge fan of 3 piece bottom brackets and it is great to see that Sugino still offers a top of the line model...

Once you get the right tools come back for any walk through you need when it comes to the other stuff... you will want to check to make sure that 109 mm spindle gives you the right chain line and matches up with your chosen cranks.

Baby steps...

Ha. Well put. But you know, just because I'm going through this assembly process for the first time doesn't mean I don't know anything about bikes. I spend an awful lot of time on my current bike and I feel I have a pretty good idea of what areas of my bike could use improvement.

I recently came into some extra money and am simply seeking to put together a bike I can really really call my own and take pride in. I sprung for nice components because I want a nice ride. Now my ignorance is limiting me when it comes to this. I imagine the veterans around here could say things like "Oh yeah, you don't need that. Get this; it is half as expensive and just as good." I don't know those sorts of things and I'm going to pay for it, but I'm okay with that.

I don't actually have any biker friends where I live so this is kind of a solitary project apart from the fine cyclists on this forum. But all in all I feel really good about everything and am extremely excited to actually get to work on it.
