Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Why would you take the rear brake off? Bikes with cantilever studs and no brakes look absolutely horrible.

It's not ruined but I got that aluminum road frame for 100 bucks on sale. Really though, I only filed the front of the dropouts about 8mm. I was very very careful and the frame could very easily still be used in a geared road set up.

Why does anyone take off a rear brake? It may look "absolutely horrible" but that doesn't change the way it rides.

I honestly don't know why anyone would take off their rear brake on any bike which is designed to accommodate one.

650c 700c, whatever. The dual aerospokes destroyed the classiness of that frame. Not to mention, you, seemingly, went for the "appeal" look with the intention of selling.

Pretty lame. I don't usually criticize, but if you're doing all that with prime "hipster" pieces just to sell, that's pretty boring.

My old bike from back home.

Mostly stock Schwinn Madison. Swapped the handlebars and rear cog for a Surly. Also had a minor crash that smashed my front wheel so had to make another from some random parts at my LBS. It's a Mavic something or other in the front. Custom paintjob done by me, spray can style. Painting was a lot more work than I had anticipated. I wasn't a fan of the baby blue of the original. It looks a little like it's black and orange but it's actually brown and orange.

I'm going to get a new bike when I get to Australia soon. That Cannondale track frame looks nice, maybe I'll look around for one of those.

This is what happens when my kids and I are bored in the garage! We build things, including these two single speeds.

The Miyata's front and rear racks go on tonight. It will be a fire road bike for dad. The boys already have their own Surlys. The Casati will go single speed at least through this fall. I stole the Centaur crank from my oldest son's track bike. He won't need it until next spring, when the season resumes!

I just built my first fixie. It's an old Fuji Steel Frame, Bianchi Pista Crank (w/ Salsa Chainring), a sweet mustache bar and a front brake (just till I get used to riding it).

The Casati doesn't miss much, it was a single when I liberated it at a garage sale. It'll end up with either an entire C-Record group or 10 speed Centaur. Haven't decided!

I do agree on the C-Record, it would really fit the bike quite well. Now I just need to win the lottery to pay for it! I'll work the local sources this fall and winter. We'll see what I can score before I have to pay the big time ebay prices.

Hello folks. I'm new here; just built up this old langster frame from ebay:

Highlights include a delabeled kestrel carbon fork, sram s300 crankset, cane creek brakes,
sram tt levers, carbon post, selle san marco skn seat, gatorskins, easton bars. It's great fun!

Josh
PS this forum has been a great resource in choosing parts, so thanks all!
