Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It was custom. I saved enough $ to either get a used car or buy a nice bike so I went with the bike since I have no desire to drive and ride bikes to get places.

you are really lucky to live in a city that allows you to do that. I would love to only have a bike. Austin is bikeable, and I bike to about 75% of places, but sometimes I need to go like 30 miles and i'm on a time crunch. But, good news: last night the Austin city just approved a plan that will add 250 miles of bike lanes to our city and several bike only paths. Sounds like a pretty significant improvement.

Yeah, being in a city like NYC is a big reason for this. I understand if I were in another, this wouldn't be the case due to the heavy distances involved/unbikeability. That's great that they're planning on doing that for your city

I usually keep it around 16-18mph when going easy on a flat. I'd love to ride with you. I'm always riding by myself and it's nice to have company

Cool, I'll private-message you when I expect to be in the city. Do you ride in Central Park?

New conversion. Built it for my gf to ride, hence the low gearing. Yes, it has two brakes. That means I can stop about 10% faster than those with just fronts and about 80% faster than those with none. I just don't get the whole no brakes thing. Yeah i know you can skid, I also know that the static coefficient of friction is almost always higher than the kinetic and your front wheel bears most of the braking force. Its not fixed BTW. Enjoy

I hear that man. Cars used to be my life. Since I moved here I would never want one again. I have more into my bike than my last car cost, and I'm totally fine with that. If any of you guys need people to ride with hit me up. I'm usually solo...

I thought he said he did but I've just reread & am wrong. Can I replace "skid" with "slow down/stop more effectively"?

I'll match your awesome bike,

Raise you a:
Hammered on stem,

Custom bullhorn bars with hockey tape,
Half sanded frame,
Duck taped seat with a ziptied light,

And call:
Custom straps

Now thats what I call bike poker
