Anyhow, back to the bike. Yeah, 38C are plenty big. My frustration with me Trek Soho S is that my 700x35 pert-near rub, and are crazy hard to get through the brakes (though I may swap brakes).

Frames only are definitely a good option. I know that's what I'd be looking at (of course, I'm still waiting on a TT Raw). The inferno red on this sound good.

BD / Mike - on fender clearance, do you think a 45 or 52 fender would squeeze in there (given the clearance)? http://www.velo-orange.com/fenders.html

I took a couple of pictures
a little dark - but should show room
I think a 45 fender will fit - maybe even 52

I am going to start posting actual frame drawings on sites
that should help

The tires in the pictures are 32s and he's looking at pricing the bike at $449 or $429

New question however, could we get a pic of the left side of the bike? I want to see how the rear cable is mounted.

Thanks

your wish is my command

I think that as a utilitarian bike, colors like black, white, brown should be options.

Ooh, now that's a LOT of clearance. Yeah, I suspect those larger fenders would fits the brakes without any mods too. Frame drawings would be great. You said there's 52mm side to side? Ooh... That might actually fit a Schwalbe BA 622-50 (29x2.0) as max width on that puppy is 49mm. Of course one would likely have to use flat fenders (like Woodys... maybe a Woody Chop Chort in the back), and go with a hub brake of some sort in the front (no problem since I'm wanting to try out a 2009 SA XL-FDD anyways), and fixed in the rear (no brake)...

Good points. Raw would be good too, I'd prefer this in Raw than the TT Raw... but then again, I'll probably say the same thing whenever you bring the Kilo OS out (that's the one with the planned double top tube, right?)... so, BD / Mike, you might want to start disregarding my comments about Raw finishes...

axcxnj 04-23-09 02:22 PM

i, for one, am glad that this bike has calipers and not canti brakes...its more of a road bike, and by the looks of those brakes, the frame and fork will limit your tire sized before the brake will. canti brakes are good for cross bikes and off road...which is why there is a fantom cross uno (which i have and love) but i want a fat tired road bike, and this one is calling my name

Great looking Bike! I've been thinking about getting a steamroller, but I'll wait a little longer.

Thanks BD...

Any chance you have a picture of the metalic green? If it's anything like the old school 'British racing green', neither hell nor high water nor rent will stop you from getting my hard earned money.

+1 on long reach callipers, not cantis. Nothing wrong with cantilever brakes, but this is a road bike that can take wider tires, so it's perfectly acceptable if it can't fit a big apple. Not every bike needs to.

A toned down blue, like the "Mink Blue" on old Raleighs, would look good on this bike. I'd also vote for a deep green. Either color would work well with a metallic fleck. I really don't think a fade would look so great, as this frame seems more suited to townie or commuter builds where classic and simple color schemes seem to work a lot better.

Use cable clips. That way, when you sell the bike, some hipster doesn't have to grind the cable guides off and ruin the paint job.

Bikes Direct, this bike looks like a winner to me as an entry level bike.:thumb:

Now if you'd only change that website design. So last century. :(

Wish it looked more like a 09 Raleigh One Way and I'd definitely buy one.

whoosh! 04-23-09 08:09 PM

+1 on earth tones, goes with the utility-ish idea.

Sorry
No pictures of Red or Green yet
I will have them posted as soon as they come in
[most colors I order off paint clips in books]

I loved that Mint Blue from old Raleigh Pros
and maybe I can find something close

Maybe you are correct on fades, might not be good on this style bike
better for racing bikes I guess [although I like fades]

In gloss or matt?
some earth tones are popular in matt finish
But I would see this type frame more in gloss, metailic, or pearl

I really like the idea of matte finishes. Personally I think that they would be well suited to this bike
Although white belongs glossy, other darker ones, the "earth tones" should be matte

Coming late to the discussion:

I would really love a commuter friendly color scheme:

lime green or orange with reflective qualities - so the bike would be very visible both during the day and at night...........

WHAT ABOUT MY FAVORITE COMMUTER COLOR?

YELLOW!!!

You can see Yellow bikes from the Moon - Should I bring this frame in Yellow?

I really want to bring a ton of these frames; and I am thinking now
PEARL WHITE
MET BLACK
MATT GRAY
Mink BLUE
Emerald Green

other ideas?
I would really like input; as I will order them right away and try to get the frames in way before the fall / winter for those that want to build up a really nice SS commuter / winter bike

HandsomeRyan 04-25-09 09:53 AM

Can you tell us what the font used on the words "Kilo WT" is. I want to have my local vinyl shop cut me a matching "F". :)

I tried using What The Font! but it didn't work :(

also, Bikesdirect, 1 question and one comment.

Comment: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/thehour.htm there is a spelling error. Should read "Can you beat Eddy's distance?" That one was bothering me for a while

Question: When is there going to be update on the Motobecane Pro Track? I'm really excited for it!

Keep up the awesome work, when you know what the people want, you know what will sell well!

Honestly, this seems like a really good list. I'd buy the blue in a heartbeat, and both that and the green have the potential to yield really classy builds (esp with brown/honey leather). Chromed fork ends would be simply awesome (though maybe really only on the blue and green), but I imagine that would bump the price significantly (?). The remaining colors also seem like sensible, basic options. I strongly agree with your choice to put some luster in all but the gray, as I think matte would look worse on the remaining colors.
