Personally, I hated skating...not skaters....just skating. I have friends who skated. I gave it many chances, but just couldn't get into it. Skating is so inefficient compared to any kind of biking and I never felt like I was riding anything....just flipping a board around beneath my feet. Skating has always seemed slow and jerky to me..not smooth and flowing like BMX riding. I'm sure thats not the case for many, but it was for me.

I think he was referring to rollerblading not skateboarding.

mihlbach 05-11-09 10:26 AM

Hated that too!

"You said If you ride backwards with a BMX using a freewheel, then you HAVE to pedal backwards. THINK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND."

But you don't "HAVE" to pedal at all. We are talking freewheel, right?

Although it's kinda mean fun to watch you try to figure it out, I'll step in here:

When your wheel turns backwards, the freewheel engages, causing the cranks to turn. If you don't pedal backwards when traveling backwards, you'll apply forward force to the cranks, and your bike will stop. Freewheels can only "freewheel" one direction, otherwise you wouldn't be able to apply force to the rear wheel.

AnOxymoron: I am really enjoying your posts, please keep up the good work. You set the bar pretty low with your OP, and you consistently lower the standard with each and every reply. Very good.

You haven't ever tried skating a bowl, have you? :P

But I don't even know what the hell is going on with this thread.

Do I think it's stupid that people do tricks on their fixed gear? Yes.
Am I going to throw away my bike and get butthurt about it? No.

It was all about emptying out swimming pools back in the day.

mihlbach 05-11-09 02:36 PM

Yeah, we tried sneaking into pools, but really all the pools I know of had squared off angular corners...no smooth transitions. Sucked for bikes and boards. We built a few ramps, but mostly just rode street and dirt jumps. I spent most of my youth in a very rural part of the midwest...in order to get anywhere worth riding, you had to go by bike. I used to ride 7-10 miles to get places to ride and even then the riding places were spread out over miles, separated often by gravel roads. No way was I going to skate that distance. After we turned 16 and could drive a lot of my friends started skating, but I just stuck with bikes.
