Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Threadlocker needed on chainring bolts?

I've had mine come loose on me twice now, but none of my geared bikes have had threadlocker.. Is it necessary on a fixed gear?

Bikes: Cervelo R3, Specialized Transition, Kona Paddy Wagon, Giant TCX. Lots of bikes in the Garage.

Thread locker does work and it is cheap insurance. Loctite red is more permanent than Loctite blue. they even and very easy to use gel now.
Better than trying to find nuts and bolts in a ditch.

I've always just used liberal grease and the above-pictured tool and remember to check them periodically after futzing with them. I've had a few come loose, but no major disasters since I kept up on checking them.

if you have to put loctite on your chainring bolts, you're doing something wrong.

get the proper tool, steel bolts, grease, and a torque wrench. install them correctly. you shouldnt have a problem.

best advice you're ever going to get.

I don't personally use a torque wrench... just tighten them down a good deal... never had a problem with steel bolts, I've twisted off a couple alum ones, though.

nothing on your bike should require threadlock.
