I don't know which guy you're talking about. I just had to call this guy out for saying things like "the world looked more beautiful when I was drinking Chimay Red in my loft" (so I decided to take some wannabe artsy photos of my bike). Give me a break. The bike is bleh, and the photos are not very good (from a photography POV). The whole post just reeked of artist snobbery to me, and so I had to call him out on it.

twitcho---i was just reading something you said but then it got changed to "k" and it doesn't say "last edited by..." weird.

Anyways, in response to your original post, why does a critique have to be thoughtless? I don't think my critique is thoughtless. I'm all about creating art (I'm a writer), but when you post it on a public forum you open yourself up to criticism? What's the big deal? Criticism is a part of art.

I changed it because I didn`t really want to get into it or further the argument.

It was a thoughtless critique because you critiqued the artist`s sincerity and made no commentary on his picture. It`s the same form letter critique you could apply to anyone you wanted to accuse of being insincere with only having to change a word or two here and there.

I believe it takes far more skill to appreciate what an artist was trying to do than it does to bash their art, let alone their sincerity. As far as critique goes yours struck me as being vapid and self serving in the tradition of `I must know more about art because I am bashing this lesser artist`. Worse than any other sin you can commit on an internet message board, that kind of stuff is incredibly boring.

"Worse than any other sin you can commit on a message board"???? REALLY?

That melodramatic statement makes me realize why you appreciate MIN's OP haha.

If you must know why I don't like the photos, it is mainly because of the angles and the fact that there isn't a single shot of the beer and the bike together (because I think that the color of the beer would look great next to those skid patches). It doens't take a professional photographer to realize those photos are whack.

I don't think I'd consider that statement melodramatic. Boredom is the worst state for a human being to find himself in. I'd rather (and have chosen to) suffer than be bored. Pain, joy, despair, elation, these give our lives meaning. IMO boredom robs you of the only meaning you can derive out of life. That's just me though, I respect your right to disagree.

I don't need to know why you dislike the photos, I wasn't crazy about them either. I simply pointed out that your first attempt at a critique didn't amount to anything other than a form letter personal attack on his character. What's the point?

Another melodramatic quote!

Boredom is definitely not the worst state a human being can find himself in. I understand what you are trying to get at, but I do have to disagree with you. If you really believe this, then you clearly have not been in much pain. And I guarantee you wouldn't be singing that same song while you were in pain.

Anyways, this is a bike forum. There are tons of boring posts on here everyday. In fact, I bet most people surfing this forum are bored.

You're assuming about a person's character again without knowing them. You certainly can't transpose the way you derive meaning in your life or your set of values onto another person so it's terribly short sighted to tell a person "I feel this way, and because I haven't given much thought to the interpretive nature of reality, I assume you must share the same value system and therefore you must have had different experiences to come to a different conclusion than the one I have". While the way you interpret your experiences led you to your conclusion, it's borderline ridiculous to assume that the only way to arrive at a different conclusion is to have had different experiences, or that your conclusion is the only possible one that can be correct. That's borderline ridiculous and if I were in your shoes I'd consider it a strong character flaw, but you're free to do whatever you want.

Thoughtful comments from The Twitch. Bravo.

PedallingATX - you're comments aren't without merit. I initially thought of including only two images - the Chimay shot and the skid shot. The colors work well together.

Taking a step back though, I think you're overreaching. I'm not an artist and don't claim to be. No far from it, I was drunk and I posted 7 photos on bikeforums.

The artistic gestalt, if any, comes from the public discourse over the photos.

Are you serious, bro? LOOK AT YOUR OWN POST. You are talking about the interspective, individual nature of reality and you post "Boredom is the worst state a human being can find himself in" Not I...a HUMAN BEING. HAHAHAHAHA. You just "transposed the way you derive meaning in your life *bla bla bla* onto another person. Seriously, you just proved your own point. Good job. BTW, I'm pretty sure you stole that sentence from a textbook somewhere b/c it is just too ridiculous. You're a joke.

EDIT: also you proved your own point by saying "assuming about a person's character" and then saying "i'd consider it a character flaw". You clearly have no idea what you're talking about and just love to spout out this pseudo-intellectual BS.

I didn't honestly expect better from you, but a writer should understand how to quote someone properly. While I definitely did say "I would consider it a character flaw" I also put that fragment inbetween two other statements to say "If I were in your shoes I would consider it a character flaw, but you're free to do what you want".

I won't really bother explaining myself further because I don't think you're making an honest effort at exchanging ideas. I hope you grow out of it, I know I became a happier person once I did.

I tacked that example on at the end of my post. Please, try and explain that other example. The one about boredom being the worst emotion a human being can experience. Tell me how you aren't proving yourself wrong there, plz. The point is, you are so full of **** it's ridiculous.

Also, just b/c you say "if i were in your shoes" doesn't really change anything. You're still saying the same thing, you're just trying to cover your own ass.

you said "Boredom is the worst state for a human being to find himself in." That is a statement, a complete thought, a sentence. One that violates everything else you say. You don't say anything about it being your own personal opinion into later in the paragraph. IMO and "That's just me though" apply to your third sentence only. If you wanted to qualify that statement you would have had to tack a qualifier onto the beginning or end of it...understand?

You can't possibly not understand the basic structure of a paragraph.

"A paragraph (from the Greek paragraphos, "to write beside" or "written beside") is a self-contained unit of a discourse in writing dealing with a particular point or idea."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paragraph

At this point you're just being willfully stupid. I've got better things to do, so I'm off to go do them
