Yeah, I guess I'm throwing this idea out the window. Thanks for the input.
I don't give two ****s about NJS. I was exaggerating a bit; double straps and quad cages are ~$60. Show me where I can get them for $15 and I will forever suckle from your swollen teat of knowledge.

I have this really ugly pair of shimano shoes i use. They have a recessed cleat, but other than the fact they say shimano on them, you'd never know they're cycling shoes, just really ugly.
If you don't want the look of clipless pedals, you could always get these:

Clipless pedals and shoes are lightyears better than clips and straps (double or single), but good cycling shoes are what makes them so effective and comfortable. Double straps are fashionable and all, but not nearly as much of an upgrade when it comes to the performance.

lol@McGuyver clipless. That's some sketchy looking stuff right there.
It's well worth sucking it up and getting some stiff soled MTB shoes imo. My first pair of clipless shoes were a semi-casual, flexy soled shoe (Specialized Taho), and each pair of shoes I've bought since have gotten progressively stiffer. I don't think I'd ever go back to flexy soled clipless shoes.

i went from clips and single straps, to double straps, to clipless. as above people have mentioned, riding clipless is a significant improvement over clips and straps, even if you're running doubles.
if you're spending more time on your bike than off, get some MTB shoes so you can still walk around.
if you're spending more time off your bike than on, i don't see the problem with clips and straps.

This thread is ******** to me, i switched back from clipless to clips and straps because i wouldnt ever ride my bike because it was so much of a pain to put on cycling specific shoes.
Whenever i want to ride my bike, i just hop on and go, no special shoes required.
This whole ideas seems a bit dumb if you ask me.

yeah but wearing clipless shoes when you're doing other things than riding sucks...it's like walking around in ski boots or something
the only time I would ride clipless is if I was using my bike for the sake of riding and not transportation
or if i was riding somewhere where a change of clothes was going to happen anyways (aka riding to a job that required me to wear a suit)

If there was ever a perfect fit for the phrase "cobbled together", this would be it!
Clipless pedals have their advantages for "serious" riding (going far, fast, up lots of hills) but for the purpose you describe you don't need them. Unless you want to buy shoes, some people are into that. A single strap and clip is fine. I've logged many miles that way, fixed gear and/or commuting, and back before there were SPD's on a road bike. Now I'll wear SPD's when I put on the bike superhero weenie wear.

I dunno. I've had some clipless shoes that were pretty casual and comfortable. Definitely not a cheap option, but I have a hard time going back from clipless.

Just rock some bad-ass cycling shoes (I have Sidi Dom 6). Maybe people think they're dorky, maybe they don't. All I know is that they make me look like I ride my bike. Which I do. So it's alright with me. And I can tell you that after having these, going back to what I thought were my stiffest soled shoe and regular pedals was so uncomfortable I didn't want to ride more than a couple blocks, even though my Custom Nuevos + Double Toshis are so awesome looking. They just sit around now. I have no problem with how the shoes look, but the pedals suck. I wish I could rock Doms with my old setup.

so... ive never even tried clipless. people seem to like them... can i romp on a skid stop and be sure my foots not going to pop off? I've gone through cages every 3-4 months since i switched to fixed 3 years ago, and think i may go to clipless. i know i most likely sound like an idiot, so feel free to point that out...
