Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

From: My response would have been something along the lines of: "Does your bike have computer controlled suspension? Then shut your piehole, this baby is from the future!"

Bikes: to many to list

bike ballet? Never mind, had a brain fart.

Ah... but there is a difference between hobo bars and the bars Ilikebikes is talking about.

These are not hobobars since they are flipped up...and backwards.

These ARE hobo bars because they were merely rotated up.

It's to the point where she gets mad whenever I mention it now. Any advice? Different brake positions? Bars girls tend to like?
Maybe a set-up like this?

Seems like if you explain the safety concerns she should understand.

Your girlfriend wore diapers and rode a tricycle when she was younger too. Time to move on..........

I'm a fixed gear commuter and those flipped up, backwards bars look nice to me!! And if the guys in that YouTube clip use them, they must be cool, too!

And these days, in Philly, I've been seeing more & more hipsters using them... Weird.

Sorry, good people...I keep coming back to this 4+ year old thread. It still pisses me off when some snyde a**hole ridicules something they know so little about.

The practical matter of flipping your bars allowed you to be comfortable on a "racing bike", marketed to promote style over substance. I like my bars flipped, they are comfortable. It's a tradition I grew up with. I am not a bum and I couldn't give less of a f*** what some wanker thinks of my bike. They look cool to me because I remember where I came from and don't rely on trends to make design decisions.

It's all about free choice, ya' know...and tradition. I'll bet the guys at 4th and Indiana would be more philosophical about this and let our judgmental friend choose which of his wheels he preferred up his ass.

Here's my ride for winter. It's been posted elsewhere on the forum as well, sorry. Building another fixie this winter. More rat this time.

Peace.

Just because you grew up with your bike set up wrong, doesn't make it any less wrong. You've spent money on a tall stem and a TT brake lever that should've gone on a north road bar.

Or even just a tall stem on it's own.
