You blow by some fool on a carbon/titanium 6000 gear wonder bike going uphill on your fixed? Happened to me several times riding loops on my '77 steel lugged fixed in Prospect Park today. Gears are for wimps!

I just like to do it on my Trek 8500 (mtn), 'cause I know that it is waaaayyy lower geared and I like the look on their faces when I say "on your left" and crank by.
Of course, after chasing these roadies for ten minutes and then passing them, I always feel like I might puke
Good training, I guess...

I find I pass them uphill more often. Not anywhere near as often on the flats.
But if I see a hill, I know it means that I have to really start pumping or I won't make it up the hill. So I'm already attacking. The roadie on the way is just icing on the cake of actually making it up the hill.

You gotta love that. What I think is even better is the fact that you are in a t-shirt and cut off dickies while carrying a case of beer on your back.
You want to look back to see their face, but just look forward and smirk. It steams 'em.

thats the best. love passing team-postal-in-training on my upright, step-on-pedaled ancient rig. usually ring my little bell and say 'great day for a ride' as i pass. dont get many replies.

While there aren't any hills involved, this is about the only thing that keeps me going back to the bike path here in Chicago. I don't begrudge any cyclist that is out riding, as I think that's the most important thing, but I do derive a certain amount of pleasure from quietly smoking CEO's on their lunch break rides on their Pinarellos and DeRosas. Met a pretty cool guy a few weeks ago doing this, actually. He was on one of the higher-end Litespeeds equipped with Campy Record 10-Speed. I said "on your left" as I pulled around him. He looked at me and my bike as I rode past and said, "Go man! Go!" I looked back at him and he had this big grin on his face. Apparently thought it was pretty cool, for whatever reason.

and if gears are for wimps, shouldn't it be easier for them to go uphill? it seems like the fixed gear rider is the wimp because going uphill is easier on a fixed gear bike (with exception, of course).

It's not easier on a fix. In fact, it's harder. That's why you have to work at it and really pump. If you don't get going fast enough, you might not make it to the top.
What I really hate is when you are slowing going downhill and hear 'click click' of someone's derailleur right behind you and the guy you passed on the way up blows right by you...

As a Gear roadie who is taking delivery of his Pista today I gotta tell ya' I've been passed by guys on all sorts of machines and visa versa. You guys really kill me with the "I love to get the guys on the high end bikes" crap. How many of you would kill to own the Cinelli that was posted on the board a couple of days ago? If you had the dough you'd buy the best, trickest fixie you could get. I ride a high end road bike and I'm pretty fast for a 42 year old. But if run up some fat guy on a C50 Colnago I don't piss on him I congragulate him for doing something to better himself. If he can afford a 8k bike big F'n deal, again good for him.

Don't own and never would. That's not to say that if you owned one I'd diss you for it. Why do you care what someone drives/rides are you that insecure that if anyone buys something that is expensive it makes you lash out at them? God just ride what you got and be a happy who give a rats a@# what someone is wearing or riding or driving. If it makes them happy then good for them.

Yes I'd pay a ton for that bike if I could afford it. I guess that makes me a poser in your eyes. To me it's like buying fine art, something I think the bicycle is. Gears or no I love bikes!
I posted this on the road forum in response to the fixed v geared thread:
Define climb. If you mean a 7% grade for 1/4 of mile I'll buy that but if you get onto a mountain you'd have to be a hell of rider to pull a 46x16 up 3k of elevation change. I'd love to see that on say the the back side of Angeles Crest (ave grade 9% max 15% total length 13.5 mi) in So Cal or up Fernwood off of Topanga Canyon (ave 11% max 17% 7 mi). You would have to be a hell of rider to pull this off faster than a good rider on a geared bike.

Although I haven't jumped into this thread to exclaim my joy at passing roadies, I do have to say that I damn well DO care what other people are driving. especially if its some pointless, gas-sucking, road-dozer like a hummer or some other SUV. The problem I do have with many roadies on their expensive bikes is that, for the most part, its obvious that they don't commute on them. They have these bikes and see them as just a hobby or just for fun. I don't give props to squids who go out cycling on their lunch breaks and then drive their gas-suckers to and from work.

Luckily I'm smart enough to not try to draw conclusions from who I pass.

From that POV I would agree with you. I feel that if you drive a big ass truck just for the sake of driving a big ass truck is unessesary. I felt the previous coments were more based on the ability of someone to pay for Hummer than the evironmental concerns, that is seperate issue. I do however dissagree with the attitude that just because someone used their bike as a hobby that is wrong. I ride for many reasons, to stay fit, to relive stress, and because it makes me happy. I've never been in situation where commuting on a bike was going to work out for me. So instead I've just car pooled or took the train. The bike serves many uses and they are different for each of us.

I love this post, this is fun.
While I do get that joy of passing a wonder boy on his Ti/Carbon bike, I do understand that in me is that desire to be on that Ti/Carbon bike. I imagine how my riding would improve so much more once I get it. That's what's great about imagination.
But something impresses me more, that's the wonder boy that takes my wheel, offers to pull, and we are flat out at 21 mph for a good mile or two. They aren't so set to a rigid, "I've got to stay in my MHR zone," and are willing to take some pursuit on their rides, be it a nooner from work, or commuting, or just fun riding.
I had a wonder boy(actually he was more of a Fred with UPS shorts on and a Saturn jersey) pass me the other day, and I took his wheel, he was having fits trying to see where I was, he kept looking under his arm, between his legs, all the while cranking and trying to shake me. Eventually he shook me at an intersection. I'm a whimp when I see cars bearing down on the bike path. I don't care if they see me and wave me through or not, I stop. Comes from being hit and winding up in the hospital for 40 days. Not fun.
That's been the impressive part for me this last two years of riding. I have improved a great deal, I can catch a wheel and hang there. When I started I was lucky to make it to work without heaving. It was a major acheivement to ride a whole work week. Now I'm entertaining thoughts of a club, so I have people in my range to ride with, and actually do some real riding where we are pulling taking turns and challenging each other.
I don't think the other rider is a fool, he's got something to teach me, always, or maybe I've got some schooling for him.

Yes, I'm a weenie with a carbon bike that I ride for fun -- what's your point. I ride because I love it, and commuting 55mi each way from WLA to Irvine (while I was in CA) was somewhat unfeasible.
I ride to work now, and want to get a fixie because riding my weenie bike is going to get it smashed... is that so wrong?
Love to ride, don't hate on people for why they do it... just be happy that they do.
Bikes rule, no matter what kind they are.
