This thread was a last ditch effort in sussing out this reality.

Unfortunately, I've only seen either one in pictures, so I don't know how stiff the soles are.
Both nice, the first shoe... I am sure it is stiff but I wish there was some sort of tread so rubber on the bottom. I'm sure it's great to ride in but how am I supposed to talk in and out of shops especially when they are wet? I'm also leery of blowing that kind of cash and being a half size off.

I did pick up a relatively stiff soled shoe recently... the patagonia bagley, but the toe box is too big for traditional metal clips. I have the MKS LL DEEP clips in my desk which I think I will have to install so I can ride with these shoes.... as it sits right now I cannot ride my fixed gear unless I throw on SPDs... I'm slowly caving in to this option...

Have you looked into the traditional Adidas Sambas? I wear size 12 and I have had good luck riding in them. The soles are gum rubber so they are not as stiff as cycling shoes, bu they are definitely stiffer than my Vans slip-ons and authentics. Plus, I got mine for a cool $40.

Cheers,

New Balance classic u420s, maybe?

I've been wearing these on my road bike, I use small wellgo platform pedals with toe clips... the squared off end of these shoes fits pretty perfectly into the toe clip. Never had any complaints.

Have you ever worn skate shoes(the common vans shoes doesn't count)? Something like adio, globe, dvs, etc? Those soles are fairly stiff, though I don't know exactly how stiff you want. If you are trying to avoid the chrome shoes, try the sambas, you can get them on the cheap(not 90$), and I think they are are good for riding.

Exactly.

But this has been a great thread... will keep my eye on Quoc Pham's for sure... maybe I'll go try on some timberlands in different models to get a feel for the manufactures size... might be that a 11.5 will work... but typically I'm 12 or 12.5... been off the fixed gear for about a week now... not happy but about it, but at least my foot doesn't hurt. Been puttin' 'round on the basket bike.

I just did a little comparison shopping. The Chrome shoes are super stiff, more than skateboard shoes. However, the soles are thick and chunky in my opinion. And the toe box is wide. Overall, the shoe is pretty heavy, too. I also checked out the Onitsuka Tigers Ultimate 81 by Asics that a previous poster mentioned. I think I may have found my solution. The soles are almost as stiff as the Chrome shoes, with just a *little* more flex in the top of the toe area. The nice thing is the shoe itself is slim, the sole is thin, the toe box narrow, and it's pretty lightweight. Oh yeah, and it's got honeycomb tread. I'm going to give them a shot. I do like the Dromarti's and Vittoria's but would rather just use sneakers, even on my 100+ mile rides.

I've been commuting in leather Sketchers for two years and they've been holding up well; I am almost ready to replace them now, but they still look pretty good.
