Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Oh, and go fast or practice on grass or wet pavement. It's something you just commit to. When you get it, you get it.

once I got used to clips/straps I can never feel right about bicycles with no foot retention. I visited my cousin overseas in Feb and rode his hybrid with platform pedals. Weird.

Wow.

Get a brake + clips straps and for god's sake, learn to freaking stop.

If you don't, you are going to eventually mess yourself and/or someone else up.

Wait till a dog/child/car/bike runs out in front of you and you can't stop your sweet fixie.

Calm the hell down dude, ianjk is right. You even said it in your post, "...it just looks alot cleaner without brakes..." Don't kid yourself, you definitely care about how it looks, whether you'd call it "sweet" or "clean" or whatever.

Just get the front brake. Skidding will stop you but it will take far more distance to stop than with a brake. And when you're about to hit a dog/child/car/bike you aren't going to have the luxury of that distance, no matter how good you are at skidding. And even if you don't care if you get hurt, you put other people in danger when you're riding out there brakeless, so at least do it for everyone else.

You need good foot retention (toe clips and straps) if you're riding fixed and brakeless because slowing down and stopping is entirely dependent on having your feet on the pedals. If your feet come off the pedals at high RPM you will have an extremely difficult time getting them back on until you slow down. You don't want this to happen when you're approaching a hairpin turn or a busy intersection.

Either get brakes or good foot retention, or preferably both.

+1. If someone ran into me, my son, or any of my property b/c they chose fashion over function (sweet/clean brakeless bro) there will be violence. This isn't a track, there are others on the roadz

if this is your response to people telling you how to ride responsibly, you should never step on a bike ever again. if you're such a minimalist, then ****ing walk everywhere. and get off this forum, no ones going to want to help you.
