I use SPD's, but I'm considering a switch to Crank Brothers eggbeaters.
I ride with Eggbeaters an awesome pedal that said I'm switching to DX Clones and a set of Holdfast type straps. Because I commute a short distance 4 times a day and changing my shoes everytime I get on my bike is annoying, but I will be keeping them for long rides

Or is that less safe than it sounds?
If you are going clipless for the first time (a very good move by the way) you are guaranteed to topple over once. It's a right of passage. If you choose a system with adjustable tension you will be likely to dial them down too low due to fear of toppling over but you will find yourself pulling out of the pedals. That is unnerving. You will then crank it up and as I stated you will topple over once at some point. Again, this is a universal right of passage. You will not escape. Anyone who tells you they never toppled over in clipless is lying. The only thing you can do is try not to use your best bike at first. If you only have one then try riding in the park on grass or something until fate chimes in. After that, you'll be fine. But, you must fall once.

Yes you must fall. It's great. I highly recommend it.

I fell in the Dairy Queen parking lot. I went down, and four other bikes went down. It was poetry.

(New SPD M-520 pedals, similar to my old pedals, but tension was higher. Just wasn't used to it.)

Yep, agreed, when you make that 0 MPH fall, you get your membership in Club Toombay! Toombay is a corruption of tomber, French for "To fall down" or tip over, if you're curious as to the origin of Toombay..

Luckily my bmx skills have kept me from entering this club as of yet.

I'm still of the ilk that you should have road shoes as the primary setup. Keep some chucks/vans/etc and some retro clips for the city fashion show. I obviously split my bike riding and my walking into two separate activities.

I ride Look Quartz pedals(mtb) with Specialized Road shoes. I dig the road shoes, I carry a pair of $20 old navy shoes in my bag for when I need to mingle sans-bicycle.

I went from BMX to single speed, and holy **** is it awesome! you'll be able to produce some serious speed when you switch over to a bike made for travel.

I have already, I was talking about the Toombay club. I haven't fallen clipped in yet.

BMX gifted me 28 inch quads, I have some speed.

My best Toombay moment, by the way, was when I was screwing around, trackstanding outside of the AΦ Sorority, showing off my middle aged dirty old man skills and I tipped over into their rose bushes. Never saw so many Sorority girls as the ones that came to help me untangle myself from the rose bushes. It was worth the thorn wounds. My evil plan worked perfectly. Mwahahaha!

Of course. I cringe slightly every time I read it (even though I'm American).

Damn I wish I had a story like that I went down in my own driveway practicing track stands....all I had was my dog licking my face as I sat on my side (still clipped in) feeling foolish
