Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

That suggestion wasn't for you. It was directed at the OP. All things being equal, given the choice between a FG and a comparably equipped road bike, I'd suggest a road bike for the commuting and long distance riding that the OP mentioned.

All we know of the situation is what the OP has mentioned.

For those knocking road bikes: I say don't knock it till you've given them a real shot (not a half-hearted I-rode-one-up-the-block-once try). I said the same things about clipless pedals 5 years ago and I got booed off the forum.

I ride a measly 43x18 for NYC. As a matter of preference, I would rather spin than mash...and the quick acceleration is much appreciated.

Yeah, my time is NYC demonstrated the need for being "nimble". I'd go in the 60 range now that I think about it.

Big plus in heavy traffic. My fixed gear is my commuter so I stay low, 46x19, but I can still go fast.

Yep..only the true fixers will prevail. Sort of like true Norwegian black...I'm going to start painting my face when I ride my fixie.

Scrod you're a real class act making t-shirts with nazi symbolism and joking about riding in blackface

You should come ride through my neighborhood in Brooklyn in blackface and see what happens.

"You should come ride through my neighborhood and bla bla blabbity bla..."

Dude, shut up. As if this hasn't been discussed a thousand times before, it's a t-shirt making reference to a well-known KISS shirt.

The pic of the dude in full black metal garb is just as ridiculous as the one of Al Jolson, IMO.

Nope. Just as mihlbach probably won't be riding around in corpse paint any time soon, I won't really be donning blackface. It was a joke. Get over yourself and it.

All I'm saying dude is whether you realize it or not (which obviously you don't) joking and posting pictures in a bike forum of people in blackface is offensive.

I don't come here to see that ****

OK. And I don't come here to see pics of flying squirrels, cats or dudes in corpse paint (but sometimes it happens).

It's over, man. Let it go........

Ok I'm done.
You thinking a pic of someone in blackface is the same as a pic of a flying squirrel shows where you head is at.

And the fact that you have dreadlocks makes the whole thing even more absurd.

You're absolutely right. I'll learn to be much more uptight and easily offended.
