I was mostly ignoring this thread, but then I wondered why there were so many posts for a thread that's just about gear inches.

Ah, of course, Nazis were mentioned. Figures.

Back to topic. OP, I'm a fixed gear noob. I ride a 42/16, 70 gear inches, which is light enough to accelerate fast but still lets you swish along at a good pace - certainly a good city pace.
I'm delighted I bought the fixie, it's a load of fun and I've learned things about riding a bike that I never learned in forty years of cycling. But I'm fortunate enough to have a number of bikes. But if you're new to cycling, and want one bike to do commuting, long distance stuff, etc etc, I agree with carleton. get a road bike or maybe a touring bike, with gears. In the end, it's more versatile.

I'm in Columbus, OH, so perhaps I should keep my nose out.
But the terrain sounds similar. I ride a 52x20, with a 22 tooth cog on the other side of the hub. I think that I tend to favor the larger rear cog in the winter. I had another bike that was stolen with, I think, 38x18; a bit lower, but fun too. I prefer the current gearing, but wouldn't go any higher.
When I'm not carrying a heavy load, I tend to ride my fixie, and am really glad to have it.
But I do agree with previous posts, that if I had only one bike, I'd want gears for going long distance. You don't say what sort of long distance riding you plan on doing, but I like the touring bike idea, so that you'd have clearance for fenders and perhaps larger tires, and be able to carry loads, which is really nice. I pulled a trailer with a fixed gear bike once--the older one with the lower gearing--and never tried it again. A good quality older road bike would have a lot of these same good qualities, although it wouldn't be as good with a full load.

Well, my knowledge of BK doesn't extend to ****-all, but it seems to me that there's a difference between racist jokes and jokes about racism. And for racism, feel free to substitute nazism, sexism, fascism, and just plain idiotism.

Alright I'm done talking about this
Pointing out that wealthier white people have been moving into lower income neighborhoods isn't racist.
To bring this thread back on topic OP I ride 49/18 in my ungentrified neighborhood

Ah - you see you've masked it by saying wealthier white people. Gentrification is about money moving into a lower income area. It has NOTHING to do with race.
Getting pissed because whitey is bringing money to town and messing things up is like me saying "*****z are moving into my hood and causing trouble".
You want cake?

Nobody is pissed and never have I said white people messed anything up.
Go check the data, a majority of the people doing the gentrification in Brooklyn are white so there's nothing racist about me stating so.
Says a lot about you that you need to use racial slurs to describe black people.

You don't need to flash ay data up here. I'm well aware of what is going on in the world. The fact you said "white" is a mens rea.
Nothing wrong with using gentrification or being upset about it. Tying it to a race of people says something. the Gay and Lesbian community it literally doing this in my very community. I have a gay steam room across the street from me. Lots of nice gentlemen and fat short haired ladies in my elevator. They are dual income no kids. They are bringing money out of the downtown core of Vancouver. If I don't like it I can move.
Same with you - If "the man" is changing your neighbourhood (opposed to not changing yours as you have intimated) then you have just as many rights as they do to MOVE.
Now if I had said "Gentrified by **** and ****s" in a sentence would you consider me bigoted? All I'm saying is be mindful of your words. As a white man, sure as **** have to in this day and age. I can't even made a funny joke without looking around the room to make sure I don't "piss anyone off".
shoot the dog.

And again I'm not upset about it.
It sounds like your neighborhood is being gentrified by gay people. Saying that doesn't mean I'm homophobic
Sorry dog

The irony of all this is that the black metal dude I posted is far more of a racist than the guy in blackface (Al Jolson). Black metal is basically the Scandanavian KKK, whereas Al Jolson was known for fighting against anti-black discrimination on Broadway. You people are so ****ing brilliant you couldn't even aim your phoney ultra-sensitive antiracist bull**** at the right poster. Get your head's out of your asses people.
