31.8 versus 25.4, Cockpit Overhaul

I am thinking about upgrading my stem and bars. I am currently using a 31.8 stem with 120mm of reach with +10º rise along with 1" riser bars by FELT.

I am looking at stems, as I want to get one that is not so long (maybe 80 or 90mm with 0º) but am not sure if I should invest in a 31.8 or a 25.4. Especially considering that I am interested in some new bars that happen to come in 25.4 and 31.8.

What is the benefit to using either or? Weight? Hoping for some input, as I feel like I may be missing something.

31.8 to 25.4 is not an upgrade.

Look carleton, there goes your boulder...AGAIN.

Also, 0 degree means the stem will be pointing to the sky. I'm assuming you want your stem parallel to the top tube, if that's the case, then you want a 17 degree stem with a negative rise.

If I would have said, "Im replacing my 31.8 thomson with a Dimension 25.4" then your reply would be helpful-- but even that is a stretch.

yes, i'm familiar with the angles, but right now I have a 10º stem and have used it in both directions and feel a 0º would fit suite me better. I guess am I just a little curious about the different benefits between stem clamp size.

Well, bigger stems don't really make a difference, but they're required for the oversize clamped areas on thicker bars. Oversized clamp areas mean the bars are stiffer/stronger and less prone to flex, I believe.

Oversize clamp areas also provide better clamping for carbon bars without requiring as much face plate tightening. This is really not an issue with steel or aluminum bars. Of my current 16 bikes, only two have a 31.8mm stem, and one of them just happens to also be my only bike with cf bars. I use Nitto B125AA NJS 25.4mm aluminum bars with shims to a 31.8mm stem (Deda Newton Pista, actually 31.7mm) on my track racing bike, and they are plenty stiff/strong/secure for me, as well as pro Keirin racers, who are pretty powerful dudes.
