Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

singlespeed question/help please

hey guys I've got a SS and my wife has an old Puegeot 12speed so I was wondering if it's possible to just put (on my bike) 2 gears up front and a seat tube shifter underneath me so it looks cleaner than running the cable up to the bars. Not sure if this is possible but looking for some insight please.

Wait... do you mean two chainrings up front, but only one sprocket in the rear? This is possible, but not really a good idea. You'll have to leave the rear derailer on as a chain tensioner, plus the two gears you have will be pretty close together. You're better off just going with one chainring and making it a 6-speed.

yes, thats what I mean. Well I don't have a derailer on it right now but I'm assuming it'd be a must since the chain would need to be different lengths for the 2 diff front chainrings huh??? Darn...I really just wanted 1 more gear...or maybe I"ll just step up to different sprocket in the rear.

I finally understand what you've got...

Now that I do, the double chainring idea isn't really worthwhile. The easiest thing would be to re-gear your bike. If you're still not happy with it, SS might not be for you.

what about this thing to help the chain tension if one wanted to go with 2 chain rings, single rear?
