Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Holy crap. Large image is large.

When you upload on imageshack, it gives you an option to autoresize. Anything up to 800x600 usually works well for forums.

Free wheels scare me

I'm not friendly with not controlling how and when I move.

Fixed for me.

Because non-fixed bikes can't do that?

Have you never ridden a freewheel bike? Or even a kid's bike with coaster brakes?

just means you only can increase the rear wheel's momentum with the pedals and decrease wheel momentum with brakes. you can't increase backward momentum with the pedals either.

people act like that's big deal but it's really not, especially because WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO GO ANYWHERE BUT FORWARD ON A BIKE????

i have right now three bikes; fixed, ss, and geared.

i'm selling the ss, but that's mostly because it doesn't fit me. i like the other two more- if i'm going to coast i'd like gears so i can get up to speed and then coast when i'm going faster than anything else on the road. and even then, i hardly ever coast on a freehub bike anyway.

I prefer 3x9.

But my mountain bike is single speed because I am not coordinated enough to pedal, turn, shift, and avoid trees; my foul weather commuter is fixed because it is less likely to break in salt and snow at ten below.

Variety is the spice of life.

When I converted my bike to fixed/single, I expected that I would ride them equally. But it turns out that I like fixed a lot more because of the feeling of control. While I was learning how to handle the bike with the fixed gear, I flipped the wheel almost daily. But after a week or two of that I have ridden on the fixed gear about 99% of the time. One day I flipped over to the freewheel to see if I felt stronger as a result of riding fixed for a while, but I was actually shakier on the SS because I was trying to resist the pedals and nothing was happening.

I tried riding my road bike awhile back but I kind of freaked out. I felt really out of control.

I've never ridden "SS" because it seems pointless to me. Mind as well get some gears (insert Getsomegears.jpg)
so yeah, im not voting.

I bought a single speed this summer and flipped it to fixed a month ago. I haven't coasted since.

Yes, which only gave my beard even more strength and made me more of a badass.

I'll speak up on the side of the freewheelers. Granted, I haven't given riding fixed a fair shot, but I find that I get so uncomfortable on my bike when riding fixed as opposed to riding on the freewheel. I don't ride SS for any ideological reasons, I just find that it's more comfortable.

same here. of course ill admit, i am not as dedicated of a cyclist as a lot of people here (im a hockey guy primarily), so possibly i do not analyze it so much. I am not looking to become an expert rider, just looking for some joy in a healthy (and of course cool looking) way. It all really began out of me just wanting a simple reliable, and cool looking bike. I appreciate it in any form, and fail to understand the "sissy" mindset toward any type of riding, even if a lot of its obviously a joke.
