Miele Beta

Anyone heard of this frame...can't find any information. I'm having a hard time finding a road from with horizontal drop outs around here. LBS will sell me this frame (early 1990s vintage). It's out being stripped and powder coat painted. He wants $150...sound reasonable for frame/fork?

thanks

Price wise, I cannot coment. When I first met Alison Sydor in the late 80s she was riding a pink Miele. Search on that name. If it was good enough for her.............

Bikes: Converted 1997 Trek Singletrack 930 singlespeed and a Kona Lavadome singlespeed, fixed Dahon folding bike, fixed 27" Miyata road bike, early 70's Raleigh Chopper

I've got a Miele, circa mid 80s I believe. 49cm and just my size too! My dad bought it at a garage sale when we lived in Canada. Other than them being a Canadian brand that's all I know. Sorry!

I've got a Meile MTB from about 1990, supposedly, though style wise it looks to be a 1986 or older (road geometry, pump pegs... on an MTB?) Anyways its a VERY nice quality frame and I am told at the time Miele was some seriously nice stuff.

Hey Fred!
Do you live in toronto and the LBS you're talking about is Cavern Cycles, because if it isnt, then I dont know what to think. I went in there looking for a frame and Keith showed me the Miele Beta.
I think $150 is a decent price. I probably would have bought it but I've got a 70's Wes Mason lined up. The Miele was never ridden but the guy who bought it from the company close out in ontario (Miele went out of business in the 90's) tried to spraypaint it but it looked like s***.
The Beta was their top of the line road frame, so if you like the size, I'd get it.

You're absolutely right...it was Keith at Cavern. I couldn't find the Beta model anywhere. Their best frame? That sound O.K. for $150. I've been waiting at George's to get a frame in a 56cm but his source has sent him everything but a 56cm. I haven't seen the Miele (as it's out getting painted) and I hear Keith has a very good rep, but I wasn't sure whether to wait for George (a little cheaper) or go with Keith at Cavern.
This is my first fixed, having just gotten into road cycling on a Cannondale. I haven't been on one of these old frames in years...most of them are so heavy. I guess that's part of the allure.

$150 for a good frame with fresh paint is probably a steel. Out here in Victoria I scored a Moser with most of the bits needed for $100. The downside is it was painted black/orange/white and left outside in the rain. I have over 20 hours into stripping and repainting it. It will be lovely when I am done, but it is a lot of work to do it right.

I just came across a Bianci 12 speed offered in an ad. I spoke to the guy and it's the right size, he says in like-new condition. He want $125 but I'm sure I can get it for less than $100. I haven't seen it yet.
He says he can't find a model name on it. He didn't know what a drop out is but he went to look and said the drop outs are curved up slightly from the horizontal.
Questions: 1. how horizontal does it need to be (I know new track bikes are exactly horizontal).
2. which would make more sense the Miele or the Bianci frames. Bianci is cheaper but I'm no expert and I'm unsure as to whether it would be double butted like the Miele. Did Bianci make good frames 10 to 15 years ago?
thanks for any prompt response.

Tough question. Horisontal dropouts on a road frame are not totalty horisontal. A good 'road frame' generally makes a better street fixie. Being Cannadian would vote for the Miele, But if the Bainchicomesth more usabable bits such as my Moser did, I would vote for the Bianchi.
Tough to edit in here.

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

The length of the dropouts makes more of a difference than how horizontal they are - the longer, the better. It gives you more choices for gearing.

I think most Bianchis are pretty good, but I'm not any sort of expert - I just ride one. As to what kind of steel, you'd have to look at the sticker on the frame, if there is one.

Bianchi made/makes a big range of bicycles. It's impossible to say whether this is a good deal without knowing more. Though if you can talk the person down to $100, it's probably not a bad one.

Bianchis are sick. Id definitely go with that deal. Is the bianchi sold as a complete bike?

Yes, it is being sold as a complete bike...although I'll not be using the gearing system, rear wheelset, etc.
Can you say that a 1985 Bianchi will be a better frameset than a 1990 Miele without knowing the model?
thanks

decided to let the Bianchi go in favour of the Miele Beta at Cavern Cycles. Keith said it would be back from the painter on Wed (2 days ago) and he would hold it for me.
I call him on wed to make sure it's in so I can pick it up....he's already sold it to someone else...and I've let the Bianchi go!
Nice, eh?
